What am I Supposed to Build? | Create and Submit Your Project Video | Terms and Conditions

Just to clarify - if you accept the challenge because you think you can Hack Like Heck - you're being asked to build a portable gaming device (in two weeks time).

Why?  Because, as Felix says at https://youtu.be/x0EGnydxxf4?t=15  - the Community asked for a portable version of the SNES Mini.

But Ben didn't like that idea, as he explains here:  https://youtu.be/x0EGnydxxf4?t=22

So he ended up building the Pi No HDMI MAME as featured in these episodes :

Episode 322: Rasp Pi No HDMI - Portable MAME Part 1

Episode 328: Rasp Pi No HDMI - Portable MAME Part 2

Building portable gaming consoles is fun! Here are a few photos of my first retropie zero project back when the Pi Zero was released. I'm currently working on a few interesting gaming console builds. …

OOPS. I ALREADY BUILT ONE. Time to improve the design!

Hi guys - thanks for the question

The total length of the video should be between 12-18 minutes.  We've just added all the video specifications here.

please continue to comment if you have additional questions or things need clarification.  We'll do our best to answer and update the documents as soon as we invent what the answer should be.

I've also been wondering about this. I think 20 mins is too long - typically there is advertising and branded intros and outros added as well, so probably the 15 min mark sounds right. I think I watched a video recently that pointed out videos around the 18 minute mark did the best on youtube, which would happen once you add in the sponsors branded segments to your own content.

I am wondering though if I might end up being better trying to make a two parter as well. I think it's probably best to just focus on a single "episode" for the contest, and allow for extended versions after the contest has finished. Would be great to have some "official" input on this though! image

I was wondering how long the video has to be? I'm guessing around 15-20 minutes based on TBHS videos. I presume that to be correct?

Thanks Kelly. For the most part - yeh that helps clarify things. The only potential concern is that I would be building my controller from scratch rather than modding an existing one, but also designing it to look like an existing SNES controller.

From what you've said though, it sounds like that still won't be a problem if IP concerns haven't come up from Ben's builds – plus I certainly won't be trying to claim the classic design as my own original creation!

    Hi Benny:
I think - based on your question - that there aren't any IP concerns. . . Ben has been modified contollers for years, many for single-handed use, and we've never had any IP concerns raised.

We understand that you are modding something - not representing it as your own IP. . .

    Does that help?

I understand what we are supposed to build, but now I have a question on what we are allowed to build after reading the T&C's – specifically about placing the Organiser at risk of being sued over use of IP.

Originally, my thought was to give the original viewer something closer to what they were asking for. I agree with Ben saying that the SNES mini is mostly too big to make portable (HDMI doesn't concern me that much, but maybe I can bring the unused HDMI port out for connecting a TV screen instead). However I was thinking of making a build stylised as a SNES controller with the screen from the (potentially) provided BOM built in, along side a Raspberry Pi Zero. That way most SNES games can be emulated, but you still have the lovely retro vibe in what you are holding as well.

Now I am starting to wonder if concerns over IP are why Ben doesn't do this himself? Will this be allowed to be entered into the contest?
