I mean it took me a minute just to figure out that it was Morse code. Initially I thought it was a line of text where only 2 rows of pixels were displayed. I had to select/highlight it to realize what it was.

Yes your method is much more human readable, but harder to copy into a web translator lol

I can't read it either way. I just went down a rabbit hole looking for an "easy" alternative - with mixed results. 

I'm tempted to put a LM567 (PLL tone detector) into a breadboard and try to go from beeps to text...

Cool idea. I've wanted to make a Morse decoder since before I had a bucket list. I have a couple of short wave radios that still pick up Morse code in action.

That would be cool, I've been thinking about making a decoder as a "sister" project to this one, it's on the list to consider next time I'm looking for a project to start

I hadn't thought about being able to pick it up on a short wave radio, that makes me tempted to try picking it up and decoding it as another project

You might want to look at RTTY (radio teletype) as well then. Baudot-Murray code over the radio.

I recall in the 80's a student doing this on a ZX81 with his amateur radio.

For a STEM activity you could perhaps try to use LORA to communicate over longer distances.
