One of the great joys of being able to design with electronics is the ability to make your own custom tools. DJ recently picked up a CNC router and in order to make his life a wee bit easier, he’s designed and built a pendant that will allow him to more comfortably, and accurately set up his parts in the machine. Follow along as he tinkers his way to new gadget that, hopefully, will be of use or inspiration for fellow makers and CNC enthusiasts.

    Awesome project! I'm definitely building this, it solves exactly the annoyance I encounter when milling. Could you share the file for the front plate which includes the text?

    Possibly they are sending non printable characters, get in the code and change the chars to abcd for example, if you still get nothing the issue is maybe in the wiring. The encoders need a ground referee nce. It has to be the same gnd as the mcu has. Use a multimeter to check if the pis really go low when you turn the encoders

    Anybody have any ideas.  I have the circuit built on a breadboard, but can't seem to figure out what I have done wrong.  I don't get any movement when I turn the encoder.  I only have two wires connected to the encoder to the A and B terminals.  I tried connecting the common to ground, but still no good.  Also, I have the keyboard set to the USB serial, mouse, keyboard and joystick.  I have double checked all the pins.   To try and see whit it was sending to the computer, I open up notepad and push the PIN_BTN_001MM it prints 1 on the screen.  When I push the PIN_BTN_01MM it prints 2.  When I press the PIN_BTN_1MM it prints 3. When I press the PIN_BTN_FAST it prints 4.  The PIN_BTH X,Y,and Z don't do anything.

    as far as I can tell the MCU board used in this project has built in pullups, you ca nactivate themn in software.
    if you use an arduino micro for this (as I would) it has internal pullups for sure(also to be activated in code)

    I agree. I am building one and was hoping to see if the button debounce was using internal pull-ups or not.
    I have the buttons and have assembled the top case. Electronics and programming today/early next week and then the bottom printed last.
