Raspberry Pi E-Ink Task Organizer -- Episode 422

 

Design and build of a Rasbperry PI based Calendar, ToDo and Weather display on an e-ink screen. The case is made of all 3d printed parts and is able to be set on a desktop, or hung upside down from a shelf. All code written in python and pulls data from Open Weather Map for weather, Google Calendar for the calendar items and Todoist for ToDo items.

    Some of the smart HMI display modules from the likes of 4D Systems may be worth a look for home automation applications as well.

    They appear to do Arduino, BeagleBone Black, and Raspberry Pi pin-out versions.

     

    Farnell currently appear to stock some of the basic panels. The intelligent modules however can offer a highly graphical display option when used alongside a microcontroller type application, or offload the graphics if used with a SBC.

     

    I've been looking at these sort of display modules for room-based automation where I want to be able to add a highly customisable graphical control panel to allow preset recall, level adjustment, and metering from audio DSP processors avoiding the need to run application software on a connected PC or tablet device. The audio DSP processor just needs to be sent a rather limited set of control strings from the room control panel and the panel just needs to listen for level changes to update meters and status indicators. Unfortunately, the 4D Systems modules appear to lack wired Ethernet option which is fine for preset recall but would limit the achievable metering update rates over serial UART.
