One mans trash is a makers treasure! Clem found a super8 camera in the trash, and soon realised that the original analogue films and the processing is crazy expensive nowadays. So he creates a drop in replacement for the film cartridge that turns the super8 camera into a digital one! But that is easier said than done!

Clem's Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the image quality so bad compared to modern cameras?

This super 8 camera is 47 years old. The films originally used were very light sensitive (much more than any modern sensor that could fit in there) and even with the correct film home videos filmed in super 8 looked like that. The lens is what determines picture quality for the most part. if you want to see the difference a lens makes check out videos on my personal channel (http://youtube.com/mayermakes) and watch some the oldest and newest videos those were shot with the exact same camera(Nikon D3300) but with different lenses(old: Kit lens f4.5, new Nikkor 35mm prime lens f1.8) and more light. you may understand it better if you see it for yourself.

So the look of the footage I've taken with the Super8 camera is pretty authentic for "1970s home video". that is just how it was when your Parents were young, or even grandparents depending on how old you are.

Couldn't you just remove the lens of the picam and put it directly in place of the film?

No.Tried that in multiple version, but no the focal distance and the sensor width are extremely different, you can only get a blotch of light by doing that+ you can't even get to the exact same plane because of parts that would hold the original film and should not be damaged.

How did you get it to focus then?

Extended the picam lens to near maximum and found a position that allowed me to get alignment with the shutter by trial and error, focused to UE and pushed back and forth until the image was mostly sharp. this ended up being a position multiple centimetres back which resulted in the need to extend the case.

Why the big case?

See above + I damaged multiple flat flex cables when fitting everything in the tiny version ,with only a day left until deadline i had to make sure that won't happen again + easier to install the buttons.

Will you do another version?

I plan to but It may be  a longer term project with dedicated self developed hardware.

if you would like to see that leave it in the comments below.

yes, but you need it to compensate the focal distance and sensor widht inside the camera. without the original lens you can´t see anything. it is extended to nearly it´s maximum.

    Hi,

Well I haven't done any new version YET.

but with the advent of the RPI high quality camera and the Compute module 4 it might be worth trying out this concept again.

So you might see another version in 2021, but I bet you'd like to make it abit faster, so I'd say why not try it out yourself, the files are there and you might be able to improve code and usability. So dont wait for me and start rightaway.

as for commercial version...that could also be a future possibility but I focused/focus currently on new projects for element14presents, but revisiting the super 8 cam is on my list.

Hi! I know this is an older video but I was wondering if you've made any progress. I want to try something like this out in my school engineering class as old super 8 camera are inexpensive and I like the retro look. Also, is there any hope for a commercial kit or product in the future as mentioned in the video?

    Thanks!

I indeed do, there was a lot of feedback on the project by camera enthusiasts at maker faire vienna.

I made a github repo so everbody can commit to it and we can develop this as a community:
    https://github.com/mayermakes/Super8

feel free to download share, modify and upload new versions.

it is strange how similar some of these concepts look, the digitalsuper8 seems to use an optointerrupter to detect when the cameras shutter is active! clever, but does not work on all cameras.

I only heard about these projects when i was already into building my version.

a new version will surely require a custom pcb and identification of suitable sensors as well as a new plattform to run the code, I could think of micropython dev boards.

Let´s hope some enthusiasts join in on the fun!

    1. Nolab

The most hyped project is of course:

    unfortunately only a concept image

    super8

more than a concept, working, but not commercially available and way too expensive. image

    3. Element14

The first project that is affordable and is commercially available.

I hope you will spend more time on this project, I know for sure you would make a lot of Super 8 people really happy! image

HI ,yes that camera would have been easier to work with, but I had no way to source it over here.
The case files are very crude, keep in mind that you need to find the sweetspot for the camera yourself by trial and error, this may differ from cam to cam and also depends on the sensor you are using.
clone this repo to get all the different versions I made over the course of the project: https://github.com/mayermakes/Super8.git

code is the same as linked above

Because of the size of the camera module

    https://www.kiwi-electronics.nl/raspberry-pi-camera-board-v2-8mp

    25mm x 23mm x 9mm

Is it maybe a better option to use this camera to fit inside the Super 8 cartridge?

    https://www.kiwi-electronics.nl/raspberry-pi-camera-en-accessoires/spy-camera-voor-raspberry-pi

They both have a Fixed focus lens on-board

Unfortunately I cannot find this camera model on your site:

    https://www.element14.com/community/community/raspberry-pi/raspberry-pi-accessories?ICID=rpimain-btn-topban#cases

Also I think not all files are available for download?

I miss for example the 3D printed Case file

Hopefully you can add these files.

As a Super8 film user (with very little modern technical knowledge), natural light has always been the friend of the Super8 camera user. The focal range of the lens is very basic and limited, so the viewfinder is always needed for focussing on any subject within several metres of the camera.

With the camera in this video, you have the luxury of the rear loading cartridge, where cameras I have used require the cartridge to be loaded on the side of the camera, so space would be even more restricted. You would be getting down to GoPro sized technology for this to work across all variations of Super8 cameras.

Great project. The potential is huge! I'd love to see further developments as they unfold image

Since the issue is powerburst and not total draw, you could grab a large capacitor rated at 5v + a resistor to put in the line,

That spike in power would drain the capacitor while the resistor restricts the capacitors "refill" rate to what the powerboost 1000 is rated to since refilling capacitors can draw a lot of power.

might be an option to tune down, but the issue was the sudden powerburst needed to trigger and hold the relay. transcoding and triggering do never happen at the same time only after each other.
the PiZero is not a viable solution because it uses parts that are no longer in production, so it won't be around forever in its current form. I want people to be able to rebuild these projects with easy to obtain parts, the RPI3A+ (or the classic A+) where therefor the better choice, the fragile cam conenctor on the rpi zero gave me headaches before so this was another reason to avoid it.
