Win DJ's Pip-Boy 2000 as featured in Episode 417

element14 presents
Vault Build Giveaway

Win the Xbox One X | Win DJ's Pip-Boy 2000 | Win Multi-System Retro Game Controller | Win a Pi 4 Laptop | Terms & Conditions | Build Inside the Box

Many of our Friday project videos are based on games - computer games, video games, games people play. . .  It takes someone like DJ to bring the perfect Venn diagram of love of the game, (in this case, the post-apocalyptic Fallout video game franchise), the imagination to visualize the props from the games working in real life and the technical chops to actually make it happen.  Ladies and gentlemen, we present the Pip-Boy 2000 Mk II.

We're raiding the vault of builds from element14 presents and giving them away to Community members to help us celebrate our upcoming 500th episode which will feature three of our video hosts competing in the Build Inside the Box 500 challenge.

To win this unique and functional build, simply tell us about a technology gadget from your favorite video game or sci-fi show that you would like to see an IRL version.

If you've built it, seen someone else build it, or wish someone would just build it already - tell us in the comments below.

DJ's taken a swing through a lot of his favorites - so if you're looking for inspiration, check out these past episodes:

Episode 378: Invader ZIM Animatronic GIR

Episode 411: Animatronic Claptrap Computer Case - Part 1

Episode 413:  Animatronic Claptrap Case Mod - Part 2

Episode 470: Voice Activated Inspector Gadget Hat

Episode 394: Animatronic GLaDOS Head with Raspberry Pi

Tell us which is your favorite (and why) or tell us about something you built or something you would like to see created.  The element14 Community team will pick the best comment to win the Pip-Boy.

I'm not in the market for a Pip-Boy but thought I would jot down some musings about possible sci-fi projects .... hmmm, let's see.... Could we put Jarvis in an arc reactor? (aka Alexa, Google or Cortana…

So many different things come to mind: Inspector Gadget, Rosie the Robot...oh, wait... mrvolt built those already! I'm really trying to come up with something obscure and out-of-the-box here--partly as…

The pipboy arrived today! Thanks danzima and kellyhensen!

The build had the pi swapped from an A+ to a B+(I believe). I think the video mentioned that the Powerboost couldn't provide sufficient power. I'm currently looking at the build and think it's probably the best choice to swap to a pi 0W for lower power and retaining the functionality.

    1. I like old qwerty blackberry phones but they are quite underpowered to use now. I like to see a Blackberry Pi.

    .

    .or

    .

    2.  A Dragon ball Z scouter, that can appraise basic things and identify people.

    .

    .or

    .

    3. A tiny voice activated old washing machine for socks or handkerchief. Yup they need special touch.

    .

    .or

    .

    4. Portable video communicator from jonny quest series.

I am thinking of voice activated controller for Wii/WiiU "Super Mario World" or "MarioKart" games. Player will be shouting "Left, Right, Faster, Jump, Kick.."

And if player shouts one of the swear words, Mario will make some unexpected stunt. Maybe it can be expanded to other games too.

It should be fun to watch someone playing it.

I was thinking of Thanos and thhe Infinity Gauntlet, maybe making each of the Infinity Stones perform a function like on and off, activating a specific function on a specific device, a finger can contain a laser pointer.....

Or turning the head of the Iron Man suit into a mini pc or bluetooth/wifi speaker with sound activated RGB led's.

I'm an avid fan of the Star Trek series, so I could instantly reply that I'd like to build a Phaser or at least a Klingon disruptor!

But the object that inspired my imagination and that I have always wanted to own is the fantastic medical tricorder.

Both the first model with the small cylindrical probe and the most recent one have been the dream of several generations of kids. Who knows if you could create something similar and maybe even useful?

(I can't participate in the giveaway because I am under 18, but I still would like to share my opinion)

It would be cool to see a project based off of the Fabricator from Subnautica. I've seen themed 3D printers based off of similar objects, one such example being the "Vault-Tec Personal Fabricator" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6O91ussQeus ) by Maker's Muse. While these printers are very cool, I haven't seen one that is able to fold out of a wall like the Subnautica Fabricator. I don't know if this is possible, but it would be very cool to see.

I have to admit, my son and I have long looked at the Pip-Boy 2000 and pondered on making one.  The lack of an available 3d printer always made us set aside that wonderful project.  I wonder if the new compute module would be able to be worked into a build of one...

Other wonderful ideas range from those super cool clear panel notepads that function as full tablets but when turned off are clear to some type of mini-monitor that could be incorporated into something like a Star Wars helmet.  Imagine the Boba Fett classic targeting module that swung down for him to fire his missile in The Mandalorian.  I keep waiting for Google Glass to come available but...  :-)
