Vector network analyzers (VNAs) measure how a “network” of components changes the amplitude and phase of signals. By measuring across a wide frequency range, VNAs can create S-Parameters that fully describe the behavior of a circuit. This video uses a PicoVNA 106 to show the basics of what a VNA measures, how they work, and a brief overview of how to use one.

    For anyone interested, I did a live stream while I created the VNA explanation animation. (The one with the S21 mistake!)

    The run time is 4 hours. Granted, I was talking, explaining, and re-explaining while I did the work. But, it's not uncommon for the 1-2 minute animations to take at least two hours.

    I start with an overview of my editing process. Then we re-create the image we need for animation. Then I animate it based on my voice over.

    Thanks, Mike! I'll give it some thought. I have done with an SDR but not a VNA.

    To be up front, the main reason I didn't really show the bias supply is that I didn't have an SMB cable!

    Maybe it'd be fun to explain how to make a bias-tee adapter though... Hmm.

    baldengineer   I'd like to see measurements of active amplifiers and how to power a device using the bias T supply.  Great stuff!
