DAS60 Overview

The B&K Precision DAS60 is a versatile data recorder. It measures 210 by 295 by 105 millimeters and weighs only 2.5 kilograms. Most of the front is a bright 10-inch TFT touchscreen. The built-in lithium battery can operate the unit for about 9 hours (with the backlight off.)

The DAS60 has six analog input channels, a 16-channel logic analyzer, and support for 2—or 3-wire RTD temperature probes. The DAS30 and DAS50 offer 2—and 4-analog channel variants for those requiring fewer channels. The RTD inputs are optional on these units. All three units can be equipped with an optional thermal printer. Please note that all options are factory-only and cannot be changed after purchase.

Memory and File Modes

The DAS60 operates in two modes: 'Memory' and 'File' recording. In memory mode, it displays measurements in real-time and samples up to 1 mega sample per second. The large screen lets you simultaneously view all the analog and digital channels, temperature sensor inputs, and (waveform) functions. All measurements share the same time base (sample period), but each channel can have its own vertical range.

File mode allows for storing long-term recordings. However, James found the settings of this mode slightly confusing. For example, the user interface lets you set a one-microsecond sample rate, but the DAS60 only supports a maximum two-microsecond sample rate in file mode, and it only supports that rate with a single channel. This means that if you're using multiple channels, you'll need to adjust the sample rate accordingly.

The maximum sample rate in file mode depends on the number of channels and the transfer rate to disk. Fortunately, the UI lets you know if you need to reduce the recording rate.

Additionally, B&K Precision / Sefram provides free viewer software for annotating, measuring, and exporting recorded data to CSV files.

Measurements and Functions

The DAS60 is not just about data recording. It incorporates powerful 'math' and 'functions' features. Although their names might be different from what you're used to, these features are designed to enhance your data analysis capabilities.

For example, what the DAS60 calls Math means 'calculating' parameters like peak-to-peak values of a waveform, while functions allow you to perform math functions on the recorded data. Regardless of their names, these powerful functions can help filter or scale data as it is recorded, giving you a deeper understanding of your measurements.

Fundamentally, the DAS60 can only measure voltage. However, it can also calculate (or record) the frequency of a signal or the duty cycle (PWM). Analog channels can also act as a counter. You can use any of these measurements to trigger or stop recording.

Furthermore, the device supports external sensors via a DB-25 port and provides an unregulated power output for sensors up to 200 milliamps.

VNC / Remote Support

The DAS60 offers remote access via Wi-Fi or Ethernet. This connectivity facilitates monitoring and control from almost anywhere, enhancing its suitability for remote deployments. While B&K offers a dongle for wireless connectivity, James successfully used a generic "driver-less" USB adapter.

In conclusion, the B&K Precision DAS60 impresses with its core features, extensive input options, robust measurement capabilities, and remote accessibility. Despite minor naming inconsistencies in functions, its versatility and performance make it a valuable tool for various data-logging applications.

Overall, the aspect of the DAS that really impressed me is how its software is ready to measure pretty much anything. If you can convert a property to a voltage, it can capture, convert, and record it for you.

It is a very capable box.
