Could you perhaps use clear heatshrink to attach it to the copper wire and then bend it into shape ?The neon effect silicone LED strip you get looks quite fun as well, and probably a bit brighter.
I've seen some examples of where the silicone strip has been inserted into a laser cut slot in Perspex/Plexiglass, which works well.
The LED filament wire can often be found in the 'squirrel cage' style LED lamps.
A lot of potential for those decorative projects.
Perhaps though there needs to be a semiflexible version so that you can bend it into a shape and it will then hold that shape, otherwise we are back to the EL wire problem you had. Also perhaps an easier way to cut it to different lengths.
