DIY Test Equipment: Mini Air Jet

21 Jul 2017

I work with small thermocouples and Hot-Wire/Hot-Film devices in my lab.  To test and calibrate these devices requires some crazy equipment sometimes.

Try to imagine blowing air on a thermocouple that's in a chain of thermocouples 1mm apart without disturbing the ones on either side.

Hot-films are very sensitive to the air flow direction, and it's difficult to move a big fan around keeping the air flow at accurate angles.

So, after trying straws taped to little fans and other sometimes successful ideas, I designed a small hand-held air jet for this purpose.

The case was designed using AutoCAD, and printed on a SeeMeCNC H2 Delta 3D printer.

I designed it to use a small 30mm fan , and power it with a 9V battery.

Here's the finished unit:

Here's a video of the jet in operation with a hot-film.

Very cool (in both ways : )! The enclosure looks really nice too.

    Well, I like it. I guess that makes me a bit of a fan . . . . . . . . . . . . Sorry, the 'cool' gags had already been taken)!

@jc2048 maybe adding a mount to attach to the Joby GorillaPod tripod or similar would be a viable option? Not as neat as folding telescopic items, but still an option.

I have an extra 0.3mm 3d printer nozzle I was thinking about adding to the end to make it more precise.

I also have some small tabletop camera tripods that could be used as a holder.

That's really neat. Simple, yet does just exactly what you want it to and solves a problem for you.

Nice case - 3D printers are really in their element doing prototypes that are only one step removed from a production injection moulding.

I find myself toying with the idea of adding extendable and fold-out legs to it, so that it could be set into position without having to be held. Would be a bit complicated to do with 3-D printing I imagine.
