Deadline Extended for Vision Thing, Artificial Intelligence Space Launched, and Makevember Activity!

The Deadline for Vision Thing has been extended till Sunday November 24, 2019.   Please get your final projects submitted before Monday so that we can start Community Judging that day!

The US office will be on Vacation for Thanksgiving from November 28th till December 2nd.   We will kick off our annual Holiday Special on December 4th, 2019 so we are on a tight schedule!

Greetings members,

I've been very impressed with the effort and work that has gone into the projects that were submitted for the Vision Thing competition. Due to popular request we have given a little more time to finish your project.   I know a lot of you had trouble with  Beaglebone Ai Heating Issues (thanks to ipv1 for starting this thread!) and we're hoping to get some more BeagleBone AI projects from people we sent boards to.   This was the first time we launched a Project14 at the same time as a new product release so the competition wasn't fully set up when it launched.  Another reason for the delay is that the Vision Thing projects are being featured in our new AI space and we want to feature as many finished projects as possible in:

  • Artificial Intelligence

Generally I hate to do these extensions because I worry that it will be perceived as unfair to those who went the extra mile to get their projects in on time.   However, enough people have reached out to me along with the launch of the AI space, that it made sense.  Also, this was the first time a lot of you did a Computer Vision or AI project so I want to encourage you to continue working on your project and continue the learning that is occurring.  This may be the first time we've done an AI competition in the community in any organized kind of way so want to let you have enough time for that reason as well.  AI has been identified as an area of interest for the community so it makes sense to extend this for many reasons.

It's also the first time many of you have used BB so want to encourage you to give it another shot.  Special thanks to Sean_Miller and shabaz  for providing the following guides:

  • BeagleBone AI Survival Guide V3.18: PWM, I2C, Analog/Digital Read/Write, Vision AI, Video Text Overlays, Audio, & Hardware
  • BeagleBone AI (BB-AI) - Getting Started

Since the Project14 program launched in April 2017, we've launched project competitions and special events every month of year.   A lot of hard work has gone into this program behind the scenes and watching these projects come in month after month has been worth the effort.  Since this program began, I am particularly grateful for the support I've received from my team, you all know who you are, as well as the members that have continued to support the program month after month, whether its suggesting topics that the members want to do projects around, judging the project competitions, and most importantly, the effort you have put into wowing everyone with your creativity.  I've seen the community change a lot since I've been around and can't help but see the influence of the program you started with a discussion in the Top Members back in December of 2016.

In total we have launched 34 project competitions and special events since this program began.  During the month of November we have chosen to celebrate the great projects you have made throughout this journey in the Makevember celebration which you can read about in  Project14 | Celebrate Makevember by Posting Projects in Any Past or Current Theme!  I will be doing another round up shortly and a final round up next week.  In the meantime, you can see some of the projects that we have featured already:

  • Project14 | Makevember 2019: Weekly Winners: 54 Greatest Hits (Projects 27-21) plus (Projects 021-027)!
  • Project14 | Makevember 2019: Weekly Winners: 54 Greatest Hits (Projects 20-16) plus (Projects 016-020)!
  • Project14 | Makevember 2019: Weekly Winners: 54 Greatest Hits (Projects 15-11) plus (Projects 011-015)!

Another round up will be posted this week (Projects 10-6) and (Projects 5-1).   A couple of points to emphasize is that this is not an ordered or ranked list, and these aren't necessarily the best projects (that's subjective) that the featured members have submitted.   Along with the individual projects featured we have featured other projects that have been done on Project14 by the same members.   When this is all over it will be fun to count all the projects that were featured, all the different members that were featured, and all the projects that were made in support of the Makevember activities.  Hopefully, this will help grow support and participation for the Project14 program in the community with new members, encourage people who have participated in the past to join in the fun again, and acknowledge the great work you have done in support of the program so far.   We'll try to get through as many projects and community members as possible throughout this month!
