Monthly Themes
Monthly Theme Poll

The theme this month is Restoration & Repair and it comes from an idea from neuromodulator .   The idea is to restore or repair electronic equipment, it could be an old bakelite vacuum tube radio, vintage test equipment, or any other electronic equipment that needs some love to work again. The restoration could include fixing not just the electronics but also the chassis or aesthetics.  This is a great opportunity to fix a device that is malfunctioning instead of throwing it away or buying a replacement.image

Your project doesn't need to be complicated, you can do something that involves repairing a faulty switch and provide some insights into some troubleshooting techniques.  Perhaps you picked up a really cool piece of vintage tech from a garage that needs a little work before its restored to its former glory. A lot of older tech has a larger and more modular design which allows defective modules or subassemblies to be quickly identified and easily replaced. This is in stark comparison to a lot of modern electronics, with a smaller footprint and necessitating more compact, specialized components and package assembly, it can be difficult to fix anything yourself without special desoldering equipment, tweezers, magnifying glass, or dealing with the manufacturer. Restoration & Repair is an opportunity learn about how your favorite electronic devices work. In the process you can bring to life amplifiers, video devices, game consoles, musical instruments, music players, speakers, cameras, phones, computers, laptops, tablets, and more.

I volunteer coach for an organization called Fixit Clinics. We host events in various towns  and are now doing international zoom clinics. We advertise events and coaches sign up to explain to broken thing owners how to attempt repairs. We tackle lamps, kitchen appliances, electronics, bikes, dolls, you name it. I have PBS tv footage of a electric kettle I repaired. There may be other footage folks have taken but I haven't. Usually we onlt photograph completed repairs. Not sure what  I could show you.

While I love how it sounds and looks, I really have no need for the tape player, it has good FM, and AUX in, and it can be powered by 8 heavy D type cells. So my plan is to to swap out the tape player with a Raspberry Pi, so I can use it as one big bluetooth speaker (with some other functionality), as well as swap the D type cells with much lighter rechargeable lion cells.

    Here's another view of L43.

    image

Not sure if this part is supposed to look like this.

    image

Of course the plug for the working audio channel has just broken.

    image

I've upgraded the plug to one from an original Xbox Monster Cable. Unfortunately I forgot to replace the cover so yeah. Wire to wire soldering (sigh).

    Hi Jan,

I think you mean bulgy, right? If it's the one I think you mean, it confused me too.. I think it might be a L, i.e. L43, not C43.. it's a ferrite core inductor, but looks like a capacitor from that view.

Repaired the damaged power lead and a few days later the amp ic chip fails.

    image

    image

The blown amp ic chip has been desoldered before photo (sorry).

    image

    image

And here's the blown TDA2030A Audio Amplifier IC.

Sounded like a gunshot when it failed. The amps for other channel and subwoofer are still working. It's a relatively easy and low cost repair.

The PLAN will be to swap out the old 3 prong connector and replace it with a nice NEMA connector. There is already a hack on the power cord.

I will have to mangle some metal to allow the guts to slide in all the way. Also, I will have a connector on the primary side as well.

I might add a 50ohm coaxial output as well.
