Holiday Projects About You!

The holidays mean something different to everyone.image

Originally, this was conceived of as an homage to an obscure Holiday Special for Star Wars that just about nobody has ever seen.

The special was only broadcasted once in the US because it was so painful to watch, it's been ranked by some as the two worst hours in television history ever.  You can find versions or snippets of it online but the real challenge is to actually make it through the part you are seeing.

In the special you learn about Chewbacca's holiday tradition "Life Day", which is an intergalactic equivalent to Thanksgiving.

The movie is utterly absurd, its hard to believe that Carrie Fischer, Mark Hamel, and Harrison Ford went along with making it, or that James Earl Jones gave his voice to the project.  It's the kind of thing that could have only come out in the 70s.  Now that you too are painfully aware of how a wookie celebrates the holidays, its your turn.

It's since been broadened to be about, the kind of thing that could only come from you.  Do a project around your favorite holiday tradition.  The more unique and different it is the better.

Think about what makes the holidays special to you and do a project around it.  Use your imagination to build something that could only come from you and what makes the holidays unique to you!

This holiday is yours, where we all share with you the hope that this day brings us closer to freedom and to harmony and to peace. No matter how different we appear, we're all the same in our struggle against the powers of evil and darkness. I hope that this day will always be a day of joy, in which we can reconfirm our dedication and our courage. And more than anything else, our love for one another. This is the promise of the Tree of Life. - Princess Leia

image

If you want to relive the glory days of 1978, or what you imagined life was like living in the late 70s go for it.  You could make your own obscure late 70s movie prop complete with lasers, sound effects, and as kitchy as you want it to be.

Or, you can make a fun project in the holiday spirit.  You could make a snow globe that warns you of inclement weather, voice-activated ornaments, jazzed up holiday cards, LED decorations - anything that means the holidays to you.

If you celebrate Hanukkah, the community needs more Hanukkah projects!

So, if you don't have a tradition you celebrate, don't want to celebrate the one you grew up in, do what Frank Costanza did, make a project about how the holiday's make you feel.  Cause after all, there's always a Festivus for the rest of us!

You can also do it around a favorite movie you watch around the holidays or a tradition all your own.

If you're like me you're excited about the release of Star Wars:  The Last Jedi on December 15th.

Show your pride by making your own Star Wars Holiday Project

Project14 is all about inclusivity and so is Star Wars.  The movie was based on Joseph Campbell's The Hero With a Thousand Faces.

In it Campbell took Jung's archetypes and used it to map out the common underlying structure behind religion and myth.

Projects can be whatever the holidays mean to to you!

It can even be a Star Wars project, if you only believe in the Force.

How to Submit a Project Entry

Project14: Monthly Project Competitions About You!

Come Up With a Clever Name
Stick to the Theme
  • A clever name can make your project memorable.
  • The right name can distinguish your project from others and help create buzz around your project.
  • This project is your baby! Part of the fun of bringing something new into the world is coming up with a name.
  • If you have an idea for a project that doesn't fit the current theme then submit your idea in the comments section of the monthly poll.
Be Original
Submit Video Proof
  • Providing the steps you took to complete your project (text, video, or images) and providing video proof should be sufficient in most cases.
  • If your project introduces something new or something that is not commercially available or affordable then that counts!
  • If it doesn't work that's fine, this program is more about the journey than the end product.
  • A short video is all that is required but you can shoot as much video as you like.
  • You are encouraged to be creative and have as much fun as possible!

I'd love to use the 3D printer to make some positives for casting some very special aluminum keyrings. I have a number of them that are required, and since they are fiddly and small, making 10 positives…

The 3D printer I would use to assist with the production of the Reci-Pi, my submission for the Design challenge Pi Chef Design Challenge.

The Sam's STEAM kit will be proudly given to the Dorset Science and Technology centre that was recently successfully funded using crowd funder.  https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/dorset-science-technology-centre/

The team already have a successful children's club but hopefully in the future the centre will be able to host a variety of clubs for all ages. I'm very much looking forward to the proposed makerspace @

As a STEM ambassador and a Scientist that grew up in the county of Dorset I'm really keen to do all I can to help out.

Please take a look at my project submission (when I finally complete it), Project Elf House. It may not be the most advanced project to be submitted but I'm happy with my progress :-)

    Thanks
