How I Enroll for a RoadTest - Part 1: yes or no

The element14 roadtests are a great way to learn new things. Whenever I see a test that interests me, I enroll.

Success is not guaranteed. I've been selected for some, not for others. In this series I'll explain how I decide to enroll or not.

I'll also show how I build my case, including some examples from my applications.

I might also try to build a case for a new roadtest interactively in this series... You can give me advice on what I should add, delete, change, improve...

When do I enroll?

There are several things that drive the decision to apply. When the roadtest subject is something I can use here and now, it's easy.

I just enroll image.

But in most cases, I'm a bit hesitant. Sometimes I do a quick view and don't come back. Other times I think I can't be bothered, but find myself revisiting the roadtest announcement a few times. That for me is a sign that I'm interested, but that I don't know that yet...

Sometimes I start searching for more documentation, and I find that pulse of inspiration. A sign for me that it might be worth enrolling.

I mull over the subject a few days. And when I come up with a nice application story, I apply. If the inspiration doesn't come, I leave it to that. It's a sign that I'm not the right one to review the thing.

In the next post, I'll show how I build my application text.

I don't have a strategic approach. i try to make a resourcefull application, explaining how I'll run the roadtest. I'd like to create a case for the TI ultrasonic sensing evaluation kit roadtest in this…

Interesting topic - I never would have thought of blogging about the process, but when I think about it now, there are a lot of steps and paths I go through to arrive at a proposal or even if I don't get…

Your approach to applying is very similar to how I decide to apply.

For the Beyond the Phone the added incentive was a very open conversation between sleuz  DAB and myself.

Hopefully anyone thinking about RoadTests or Design Challenges find this useful.

I've submitted my try-out application for a RoadTest:

    Hi Jan,

really interesting. I have only roadtest one product with few results as an almost totally lack of documentation, software, information etc. Instead now I am preparing the material and tests trying to follow as much as possible the initial proposal when I have enrolled. I think that a well split document in the different phases was missing in the tutorials here. And it is valid for any kind of testing process for a new product, IMO. Maybe that some formal rules that are specifically based on the Element14 requests maybe omitted or simplified in the process but I opt for 95% of validity in any case.

Thank you for this topic. Enrico

Thanks . I'm planning to write my initial application this weekend - when I'm home - as post 3 of the series.

I don't mind helping with this if I can. This road test is one of those borderline road tests for me - it is an interest of mine and I always wanted to build a better ultrasonic sensor, but I am involved in 2 road tests already, so I won't apply for it myself.
