This is a quick unboxing and power up of a $9 CHIP computer in case anyone had doubts about the Kickstarter promises....

For some reason I cannot insert a video in a blog since the site upgrade, so you will have to follow this link:

The Pine looks like a great little computer and there are other interesting modules out there as well.

I was looking for the absolute lowest cost way to get a full color VGA display, including LCD. I was not looking to replace a PC, just a more capable display for tiny microcontrollers like Cortex M0.

The CHIP provides what I want and a bunch of other features that are nice to have for some applications, but costly in wasted space and power for other applications.

Pi Zero might be a contender, although I don't think it comes with the right video connector. It wasn't on the radar when I ordered the CHIP.

I was considering the CHIP computer until I realized:

    1. They are only providing VGA support at $9. The upcharge for HDMI was about $15. image
    2. They charged $5 for each computer ordered. Really? image
    3. The ram is 1/2 GB only. Way small in my book even for Linux.
    4. On the plus side they do include WiFi/Bluetooth. image

So I saw Pine 64. They have their points:

    1. A 64 bit ARM 53 chip latest technology instead of a 32 bit ARM. image
    2. HDMI 1.4 4K included.image
    3. They have $15 with 1/2 GB or $19 with full GB. Wow.image
    4. WiFi/Bluetooth extra $9.99 + .25 shipping. image
    5. Shipping $10 for initial package with reasonable upcharge for more. image
    6. Optional additional 1GB for $10 more.image
      So what is your take?

Thanks for hearing my rant and rave,

    Clem

I'm just using an old PC keyboard right now - any USB keyboard will work, or you can use a Bluetooth keyboard.

I was kind of surprised.  And, they didn't offer a 'two-fer' deal either.  Actually, I'm glad; I don't know what I am going to do with the ONE, much less if I had TWO?? Couldn't turn down the price though.... I have, what, less than fifty-bucks in it so far??  Sure interested in your progression with this thing.
