Is it possible to transmit and receive smell?

Odor electronics a possible extension to the current electronics world that would revolutionize the entertainment & safety domains. The integration of odor into the electronic world has only attempts with some success. Also there has been some products in the market.

I was able to collect and machine learn smell information and replicating the same in my bachelor's degree project, which I will be posting here soon.

 

I couldn't find time to recover my bachelor's degree project where I had used MATLAB's machine learning package. But I was able to remodel the whole system and using AWS Machine Learning service and Arduino MKR1000, I have developed a much similar project.     Smell is the perception of odorants, or airborne chemicals that an olfactory system can detect. There are many difficulties when it comes to representing all possible combinations we can detect. Different humans express different kind of olfactory receptors (olfactory transducers), each human has different olfactory capabilities (put differently, some smells may not be detected the same way (or detected at all) between different humans).  There are hundreds of ORs (olfactory receptors) that a human can express (produce),  each OR gets activated by multiple chemicals. Each ORN (olfactory receptor neuron) expresses a single OR and a single chemical is encoded as a linear combination of ORN activity. Ideally one would want to be able to activate each OR individually, then with a bank of hundreds of chemicals one would be able to simulate each odour, but that's not possible because chemicals activate combinations of ORs. A more practical approach may take fewer odorants which could be combined together to generate a much wider amount of odors, but I'm not sure how many "common" odors could be generated or approximated in this way.
