How to wire a transistor?

Dear: Element 14

Hello it is me Noah again as you may remember me from my last post I am trying to build an arduino rocket controller and I am at prototyping stage. First of all you should know that I am using transistors BD712 which a pnp transistor that I need to amplify a current. The reason I need it to amplify a current is because I need it to increase 5V to 7.5V and to then send the current to my fixed barrier terminal blocks where it will then detonate the rocket motors. You see first of all in order you need a base resistor that connects to ground. The reason you need that is to prevent the board from short circuiting. I have placed several base resistors at several points and according to wikipedia I think I am doing this right. It says on wikipedia that I should do this.

Please can you help me because I am not even sure what a transistor is?

    1. Start with figuring out how much current your load will need and at what voltage (power). Then try linear technologies and look for a regulator that can deliver that output voltage at the rated current.

    I am talking about voltage being in between 7.5V and 9V. Could a regulator do that.

    The regulator will take an input voltage and transform it to a new level. You can increase the voltage, or decrease based upon an input voltage. A 7909 regulator can deliver 9 volts at 1 AMP. The output voltage will always be 9 Volts as long as the input never drops below a threshold value. This is a typical linear regulator (old technology). You can also increase voltages using boost regulators.

    Thank you for your help. Now I get to build my arduino rocket controller much better now so thanks. Also send me a post if you need help but I highly doubt I could do much.

    No problem. Since you are new, as you mentioned, always keep in mind when you are regulating or amplifying that devices have power limits. If you exceed these power limits the device will ... well... be destroyed, usually violently. Think of a loud popping sound and a puff of smoke. Just keep this in mind as you design; I only mention it because I've destroyed more than my share of components.
