Xilinx Linux Build

Former Member
Former Member over 12 years ago

Good afternoon,

I am using a ZedBoard and i want to build the bootloader files (boot.bin, uimage, etc). I already built several versions (v14.5,v14.7) and with that versions i had always problems with ethernet communication and no access to SDCard. I am following the steps provided by wiki.xilinx.com. My questions is what version is the recommended for ZedBoard and what kind of mistake can i be doing?
I am using ISE 14.5 in windows 7 and Sourcery CodeBench cross toolchain which is xilinx-2011.09-50-arm-xilinx-linux-gnueabi.

Thanks.

Greetings,
Davide Guimaru00E3es

    Hi cuti,

Have you tried the Xilinx official Xilinx for 14.5?  If so, do you see the same issues with that pre-built platform?

    http://www.wiki.xilinx.com/Zynq+14.5+-+2013.1+Release

If you have not already done so, I would encourage you to try this known good platform to see if you still see the same behavior.

    Regards,

    -Kevin

    Hi Kevin,

    Thanks for reply.

I already did that and i got an error: "timer clock input not found".
I built the u-boot and linux kernel. After that i ran the boot gen that generated the boot.bin. After i passed the files boot.bin, uImage and the other files i used the pre-compiled files (uramdisk.image and devicetree.dtb) to sd card.
When i booted the files the zedboard gave me a kernel panic saying that there is no timer clock.

    Greetings,
    Davide

    Hi Davide,

Are you using your own custom hardware platform that you created for ZedBoard or are you using the boot.bin provided with the Xilinx Official Linux release for ZedBoard?

If you are using your own custom hardware platform, have you enabled the Timer 0 peripheral?  I built a new hardware platform in 14.5 PlanAhead using the ZedBoard board definition and applied the ZedBoard preset template to the Zynq Configurator in XPS.  For these settings Timer 0 is enabled by default and connected to EMIO.

After building the hardware project and exporting to SDK, building the FSBL from the SDK template, I was able to create a new boot image with the new FSBL, new bitstream, and U-Boot elf provided in the Xilinx Official 14.5 Linux release and it appears to boot the same as the hardware platform configuration provided in the boot.bin which comes with the Xilinx Official 14.5 Linux release archive.

    Regards,

    -Kevin

    Hi Kevin,

I built my owm custom hardware platform and i didn't enabled any timer. I don't need to use it.

I want use my own u-boot.elf and uImage instead of the files provided in the Xilinx Official 14.5 Linux, to compile files and to configure the kernel.

I followed the tutorial provided in http://www.wiki.xilinx.com. It is necessary any kind of patch to compile u-boot or linux kernel for zedboard?

    Greetings,
    Davide

Linux needs and uses the timer, so you will need to enable it in your hardware platform to use the Xilinx Linux release.
