Initial Startup

Hello all,

I purchased a MIni-ITX recently, and I guess it was just the FPGA board alone not realzing I needed a power supply and everything else. So I rigged up an ATX Power Cable that has 12V, 5V, and 3.3V coming off of it. This is actually better because I can use my own power supply that I can monitor the power usage on.

Anyway, it didn't come with a SD Card, and it also seems that the SPI Flash was empty too -- so I have been trying to get everything up and running. I attempted to program the QSPI flash with one of the reference designs packages that are included on this website.

I can program the QSPI flash with reference designs and they are verified to be flashing correctly. I also put the Wind River linux on the SD card so that should be correct as well.

Problems:

I am able to program the system over JTAG, but I have to use Vivado 2016.3 so a lot of the material and reference designs are made for older versions. I cannot seem to get Linux or anything to boot up on the system. I also can't seem to have the USB JTAG + USB UART cables connected at the same time. My PC only detects one of them being connected at a time. What could possibly be happening here?

    The Avnet Mini-ITX kit is offered in 3 different configurations:

    1) Board Only Kit (no power supply, cables, or the microSD card). This kit is targeted to high volume customers who would integrate the Mini-ITX board into their system.

    2) Base KIt (includes cables, power supply, and the microSD card).

    3) System Kit (inlcudes the Base Kit + chassis).

     

    It looks like you ordered the Board Only Kit. If included, we ship SanDisk SD/microSD card with all of our Zynq-7000 platforms. Over the past several years, we have noticed this brand of SD/microSD cards work best with the Zynq platforms. I would sugest booting your Mini-ITX board with a Class-10 SanDisk microSD card.

    At the risk of stating the obvious, the boot mode switch must be set correctly when booting from the SD card.

    Hello npoureh,

    Thank you for the quick response. I can confirm that I ordered the Board Only Kit. I'm assuming it wasn't programmed with the boot code in the QSPI as well.

    Can you help me understand why when I have the USB JTAG connected my USB UART device is no longer detected? If I have the USB UART connected alone it is detected, but once the USB JTAG is connected again it goes away.

    Haha yes, I do have the Off Off On On Off mode set. When I'm flashing the QSPI, should I change this mode as well, or is it okay?

    Hello npoureh,

    So I think I figured out the first issue I was having -- I didn't realize it could actually boot everything including programming the FPGA from the SD Card, wow!

    The USB UART vs USB JTAG is probably the last issue -- is it possible to connect both at the same time or not?

    When programming the QSPI flash, the boot mode switch must be set to the "JTAG Mode". Once the QSPI is programmed, the boot mode switch can be set to "QSPI Mode" to boot from the Flash device.

    Regarding the USB connections, I have not personally seen this behavior and it seems to be PC related. Is there any chance you can try a different PC?

    Not only it is possible, it is vital to be able to connect both USB interfaces during debug/development (we do it all the time).

    That is what I figured! Especially when using Xilinx SDK, quick debug + UART printfs. I'm not sure why it immediately kicks off the UART from the Device Manager then. I wasn't sure if this was something you had heard about in problem reports before?

    Turns out both things were user error. Sorry about that! I replaced the micro usb cable I was using and it worked fine.

    No, I have not seen this before or aware of any of our customers seeing it.

    Do you have a Xilinx USB-JTAG module you can use for now? Yo can disconnect the JTAG USB cable and connect the Xilinx USB-JTAG moduel to the PC4 header on the Mini-ITX board (J1 next to the U3 JTAG-module).
