For those who don't want to make a BeagleBone case from an Altoids tin, this looks like a pretty nice case for US$15: LGX BB100 from Logic Supply. I like the way you can expand it upwards to make room for a cape, with escape routes for cables.

Looks nice, I notice they've got a knock-out in the exact same place I was thinking about for an RS232 port 
Hard to be sure, but I'm guessing that you'd get a carefully designed single add-on board into the case without having to expand it at all.
