UPS the Olimex way

morgaine
morgaine over 12 years ago

Last week, Olmex wrote a blog piece on their 3000mAh, 4400mAh, and 6600mAh Li-Po batteries, and made the following interesting observation:

Olimex blogged:

[These are]  compatible with all our boards with LiPo chargers like:  OLinuXino A13, A20, Olimexino-328, Olimexino-STM32, Pinguino etc.

6600mAh is real monster and can backup as UPS A13-OLinuXino to work without external voltage for 20 hours under full load.

This got me thinking about UPS backup in the ARM era --- maybe it's time for a change away from using conventional mains UPSs as backup power for our computing equipment.  If Li-Po charging circuitry is cheap enough for Olimex to incorporate it in a sub-£20 ARM board, that can't present any significant barrier to widespread adoption.  What's more, even the largest of these Li-Po batteries has single-digit prices (UK sterling), so this power technology is very clearly in the "Pi niche" of pricing.

Perhaps we should be recommending that more manufacturers provide the Li-Po charging connector as standard on their embedded ARM boards?

It's very convenient as a protection on the Beaglebone Black, I leave a Li-Ion cell connected while working, in case I accidentally unplug the DC jack (re-imaging the BBB and re-uploading files takes an hour down-time, so anything that reduces the risk helps).

I seem to remember one of your posts mentioned fitting a Li-Po socket to a BBB, or maybe it was one of selsinork's or Drew's posts, but I can't seem to find it anymore.  If you recall where it was, I'd be obliged for a pointer.

I've made this mod to one of my boards, and I need to get a connector to do it to the second board too. The battery just comfortably tucks in.

EDIT: Sorry, was slow with my post, looks like Brian found it!

Excellent, thank you folks!  And it's good to have shabaz's nice writeup linked to a thread that's battery-related, as it would be a shame for it to get lost.  I've added an extra "battery" tag now too.

PS. I doubt that anyone would complain if you reposted your article to the BBB blog as well for greater visibility.

Haha, there's more than a little truth to that, but it should be capitalized:  The Index.  He's good at gathering facts from a myriad sources together. image
