ROS (Robot Operating System) on the BeagleBone Black

One the BeagleBoard.org Google Summer of Code projects is:

beagle-ros: Integration of the Robot Operative System (ROS) and the BeagleBone.

http://beagleboard.org/project/beagle-ros/

Both ROS and the BeagleBone are great tools and increasingly being used in robotics. Having both of them working together in a easy way would be a great asset.

The project's blog is at:

Following the last post, I decided to connect a DC Motor to the PWM signal (the DC motor needs a motor controller as well, in this particular case i used the TI DRV8837). And there it goes:

Beaglebone (with Angstrom) [how-to]

ROS (meta-ros) [how-to]

IMU (Invensense MPU9150 evaluation module)

DC Motor and motor controller

Not that i consider myself an expert in robotics but let me call this simple example a Hello world in robotics (or, if you prefer Hello robot  ). Why? Well, a robot is basically a device with computing power, sensors and actuators and that’s exactly what this setup has. Furthermore, using the Robot Operative System makes it super easy to attach new capabilities to the robot.

Hopefully this homemade fan robot will help me out survive this summer coding in Spain

Anyone have plans to use ROS on the BBB?  Are there robotics project that ROS would make easier?

Thanks!

Drew

Wikipedia link (if it's the same "ROS"): ROS -- Robot_Operating_System , plus official website and official wiki . Just starting to read them.

There is another (less popular) so-called robot operating system called Player, I am planning to try that out. I'll report on any findings. I think it is more older, but not as much development on it any…

I'd better not start another robotic-type project until I finish the 3D printer. I regularly get the urge to put an ARM board in the Roomba though!

    Hi Drew,

    Thanks for the post.

I had not thought about ROS for the BBB.  Its use opens a new potential for some applications to which the BBB is well suited.
