Is it possible to add more RAM?

Former Member
Former Member over 10 years ago

Looking to buy a relatively cheap SBC to set up as a server running a memory intensive application. Been looking at a bunch, but it seems most are limited to just 1gb of RAM. Ideally I'd like to have 4GB if not more. This is the reason for my question.

Any suggestions?

balearicdynamics I just saw the video and the compute module is 512MB Ram and 4GB eMMC storage. Sorry to differ. Clem

Mmmhhh... It's true, and it's a detail I have not noted following the enthusiasm seeing the 4G 1600 DDR ... Sure that this can't be used as extra-memory ? But we don't know yet the details of the project…

I've just seen this question, There are some beginning to come onto the market but I imagine it will be a bit of a wait for 4GB systems still.

I don't know the specifics but another way of thinking might be to change the application rather than the machine, that way you could choose any single board computer.

Of course, if you are using Linux then provided there is enough storage, a large memory swap on the hard drive / ssd storage might work out.

The use of swap on HDD is ok, but may be not so great on SSD, because of how records are managed on a swap space. This could lead to excessive wear on the SSD. A better solution is dynamic swapspace. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1937251 for how to setup and reason why it works better.

    Cheers,

    Clem
