Gertboard Kit - Add-on GPIO expansion board for the Raspberry Pi

BUY NOWBUY NOWSoftware ToolsTechnical DocumentsVideoFeaturesKit Contents

The GertboardTM is an add-on board that extends the use of Raspberry Pi to devices in the real world, including motor/lamp control, and the sensing of voltages and currents. It also contains a host micro that can be programmed with code written and compiled for it, on the Raspberry Pi. The GertboardTM Kit contains the bareboard PCB and electronic components that allow you to self assemble your own GertboardTM.

It comes with a large variety of components, including buttons, LEDs, A/D and D/A converters, a motor controller, and an Atmel AVR microcontroller. There is a suite of test/example programs for the GertboardTM, written in C. , which is freely available from below Design Elements. The GertboardTM Kit is supported by a number of videos featuring Gert van Loo, creator of the GertboardTM and Paul Gibbon from Weller.  These video materials demonstrate how to solder through hole and surface mount components onto the GertboardTM.

I've just 'surfaced' from designing my version of a Gertboard. I wanted a different layout and don't need an Arduino - well not yet anyway. I'm here reading for a break. It's a shame there are so many…

"No longer stocked" sounds pretty final doesn't it?  Perhaps it's a way of saying "out of stock".  I'll be a bit suprised if the Gertboard is not to be offered for sale again but the lack of further information/explanation is not encouraging.

I am about to make the PCB for my version of the Gertboard.  If it works when fully assembled I could provide my notes and PCB CAD for anyone interested in making their own Gertboard.

I am making the assumption that neither Gert nor Element 14 will object. The rights to the design are not mine of course.

The ATmega chip has been left off my version and replaced with sockets to allow external boards to be plugged into the GND, 3v3 and 5v0 supplies from RasPi. This is how I would use the ATmega if I wanted to in the future.  Without this modification there is room to add the ATmega to the CAD.

I should point out that it is not cheaper to make this board for yourself. It's cost me £30 in parts without the Arduino/ATmega components. Another caveat is regarding the ADC/DAC chips.  They will likely not perform well above 10 bit resolution due to restrictions on layout using a single-sided board.  According to the datasheets and application note great care is required to correctly route the analogue and digital signals to avoid interference.  In particular not routing tracks beneath the chips.  I have been unable to avoid running the ground track this way. I'm hoping that a combination of thick ground plane and use of IC sockets will help enough.  I didn't go with the 12 bit option for this reason.

How can the Gertboard br 'obsolete' already?

In the last month I have bought 3 of these and one of the main points of interest was the expandability offered by the Gertboard, there are still adverts and video's of these on this site!

How can a product be 'obsolete'  in such a short space of time?, also where is the alternative BEFORE you deem it obsolete?

If you have something newer, revised or alternative - why is it not mentioned

I am sure a great many purchasers of the Pi bought it with interfacing with the outside world in mind - now this has been taken away - where do we go now?

    My Gertboard has arrived!

Looks like I have a weekend of soldering ahead of me...

Just hoping I dont end up melting something important in my excitement.

Yes - the cable is included.

I had a go at building the Gertboard myself a little while ago. If anyone gets stuck I can dig out my notes and see if I can help.

    Cheers,

    Joe

I ordered one about a month ago expecting it to be with me by now and I recently had notification that delivery is not now likely before December. Jeez, I could lay out the PCB and have it made in a week, what's the hold-up?

It's just a kit of parts for goodness sake! I cancelled my order.
