Kit Overview Texas Instruments Stellaris Serial-to-Ethernet Reference Design Kit (RDK-S2E ) offers a complete, open-tool, and ready-to-implement solution designed to add web connectivity to any serial device. Included in the RDK-S2E is the tiny-footprint Luminary Micro Stellaris Serial-to-Ethernet Module (MDL-S2E ). The most common application for the MDL-S2E is for augmenting legacy products that only contain a serial port for a configuration or control interface. In addition, newer computers, especially laptop computers, do not necessarily have serial ports, and a serial connection is limited by cable length (typically 10 m). Simply installing a Stellaris Serial-to-Ethernet Module into the legacy serial device provides many benefits including no major board redesign or software changes, easy sharing on a network other than Ethernet, tiny form-factor for unobtrusive implementation, and 10-meter maximum cable length for serial connections is no longer a limitation.
The MDL-S2E is the first serial-to-Ethernet converter available with a highly integrated Cortex-M3 microcontroller with 50 MHz of performance and ample single-cycle, on-chip Flash and SRAM memory for efficient network traffic handling. For maximum space savings, the Stellaris microcontroller is offered in a small BGA package and integrates the 10/100 Ethernet MAC and PHY on-chip. The MDL-S2E is a ready-for-production serial-to-Ethernet module with the LM3S6432 in a 10 x 10 mm BGA package for reduced board size.
The Stellaris LM3S6432 microcontroller is based on the ARM Cortex-M3 controller core operating at up to 50 MHz, with 96 kB flash and 32 kB SRAM. The LM3S6432-IQC50-A2 also features real-time industrial connectivity, with a 10/100 Ethernet MAC/PHY, an SSI / SPI controller, an I2C interface, and 2 UARTs. The LM3S6432-IQC50-A2 microcontroller also features advanced motion control features, including 2 motion-control PWM outputs with dead-band and 1 fault protection inputs for low-latency shutdown. The microcontroller also features intelligent analog capability, including 2 analog comparators and 3 channels of highly accurate 10-bit analog-to-digital conversion - with the ability to sample at speeds of 250K samples per second.
