Use Improvements?

e14 Contributor

New user, so maybe I'm missing something.  But I would like to have these:

On most tools, once you select the tool and use it, a left click on a new item repeats the tool.  Would be nice if Properties worked this way.

For library maintenance, you can't remove a device, package or symbol unless you have that item open.  Would be nice to be able to delete anything without opening it first.

Would be nice to have a "Repeat" button so some operation on one item can be repeated on another.  A simple example is VALUE.

    Hi Dave,

A couple of points need to be corrected.

In the libraries as long as you have the library open, going Library->

Remove allows you to remove anything as long as you know it's name; the

specific package, device, or symbol need not be open. So lets say you

have device called test you want to delete but you're working on a

package, you don't have to open the device. Just go Library-> Remove,

then in the little dialog that pops up type:

    test.dev and press enter

A repeat button is unnecessary since most of EAGLE's commands work this

way. If you click on the VALUE icon it will stay active until you press

escape or select another command. While the command is active you can

just left click on each component and alter it's value one by one.

Thank you for your suggestions and we hope that you continue to enjoy

    working with EAGLE.

    Best Regards,

elaborating on that: invoking a for instance a change or value command

via the command line lets you modifiy part attributs by clicking in

them until you abort the command or enter/select a new one.

    Thanks Jorge and Lorenz,

On the first item: Here's an example. I have nothing selected in the schematic page. I right click on any part, then select NAME. The NAME popup appears and I can modify it. I can left click on any other part and the NAME popup appears for that part. Now I want to change something in Properties, lets say Net Class. So I right click on a wire, select Properties, select the Net Class I want and then click OK. To modify the Net Class of the next wire, I need to right click and Properties again. Since the previous operation was Properties, why can't it just open the Properties window with a single click?  Rather, if I left click the NAME window from before pops up.  This isn't the only example of this, and if you do Properties a lot, it's a lot of clicking and mouse moves.  (Repeat does work on many commands, just not Properties.)

On the second item: I just tried this again and was able to remove a part that was not open (package).  I know there are conditions where this isn't true.  When I find them, I'll post again.

On the third item: Consider the first item.  If I want to do the same operation under Properties a bunch of times, I have to do all the clicks and mouse moves just to get to Properties as above first, then the same operation I did for the previous item.  So for Net Class, if I could left click on what I want then have a "Repeat <previous operation such as Net Class>" button, it would save a ton of time.

Lorenz, sorry, I don't understand.  I'm an old time UNIX guy, but I'm perfectly happy using IDEs rather than command line.  Can you give me a specific example I can try?

    Thanks,

    Dave

Select the command first. The command selected will stay active until you STOP it.

Example: if you select first the button info (Properties), you can open successively  the

"Properties Box" of each element by a simple click.

    >

    OK, and another thing:

To modify the netclass many times you simply use CHANGE CLASS (see change submenu).

Then click all the nets you want to have and that's it !

Ah yes.  I hadn't thought of that simple solution.  OTOH, if you click the

icon, you can left click as many other items you want and still get

properties.  If you right click then select NAME, you can still get the

NAME of all the other items.  (It switches from Properties to Name.)  If

you then right click and select Properties, it only does it once.

    Unexpected behavior.

    Thanks,
