A collection of questions from a beginer

Hi

 

Why does not Eagle come with a most of the standard packages included, for exmaple,

if I do a seach for "*SOT-223*" this one do not show up, neither do SOT-25, SOT-89 etc.

If eagle have these standard packages, they should be searchable.

 

When I a create a new device in the library I add the ">NAME" and ">VALUE" to the schematics,

but whne I include this created device the "NAME" become "U$1" why ? Should it not become IC1 ?

 

When I create a new device I want to reserve an area where no copper may be used, filled or be drawned,

in any of the pcb layers. I assume I just create an area in the package editor of the device

but should it be of the type "41 tRestriced" or what ?

Do I have to add an area for each copper layer ?

 

Unplesant behaviour of the "Net" in schematic,

unless the pins for a device in the library is made in Imperial (100 mil distance) the Net does not

connect to the pins when making a schematic with the device.

Expected and normal behaviour should be that the "Net" automatically connects to the nearst

pin within +- 2 grid steps.

    Hmmmrrff, I need to read what it says on the screen,

    Down to the left it mentions the GO command, sometimes

    it is a disadvantage to have a large screeen, hehehe

    Thanks a lot for your quick answear,

     

    I found some SOt's by removing the hyphen, thanks.

     

     

     

    Additonal stuff.

     

    When the board is routed the first times, you usally place the components out and then give some test shoots

    with the auto router to see how complicated the routign become and then start to move the components around

    to get a simpler solution.

    They ARE available, and you CAN search them. Unfortunately, different

    manufacturers call them differently. In this case, EAGLE calls them

    SOT223-5EV-VREGSOT223-5EV-VREG etc. (WITHOUT the hyphen).

    No. It should NOT automatically become IC1. Of course YOU know that you

    have just created an IC component in the library, but EAGLE doesn't. You

    might have just created a resistor, which should become R1, or a

    capacitor, which should be named C1. Therefore, you must tell EAGLE in

    the library HOW the component should be labelled:

     

    In the device editor, use the PREFIX button at the bottom right and then

    type in the prefix you want the component to have: R for resistors, C

    for capacitors, IC for ICs, etc. The NUMBERS are set be EAGLE automatically.

    Yes. The 'Restrict' layers do that.

     

    Do I have to add an area for each copper layer ?

     

    Yes. Objects in the 'tRestrict' layer prevent copper from automatically

    appearing in the TOP layer, 'bRestrict' for the BOTTOM layer.

    connect to the pins when making a schematic with the device.

     

    This IS a restriction, yes, but ALL the library parts use that grid. And

    it is a VERY good idea to build your library parts using that grid, too,

    even if you perhaps don't like it too much.

     

    Expected and normal behaviour should be that the "Net" automatically connects to the nearst

    pin within +- 2 grid steps.

     

    For simple schematics, that might be OK. For large or dense schematics,

    this is NOT such a good idea, since it might easily create connections

    to the WRONG pins.

    They are searchable, you should perform the search from the layout

    editor since packages can't be inserted into the schematic the schematic

    search won't show packages. Most of the standard packages can be found

    in the ref-packages.lbr or smd-ipc.lbr.

    How is EAGLE supposed to know that you made an IC? You could've made a

    capacitor or an inductor etc. By default EAGLE will use U$1, you can set

    the prefix you want to use by clicking the Prefix button in the Device

    editor of the library.

    EAGLE has tRestrict, bRestrict, and vRestrict (Top, Bottom, and Vias

    restriction). For the internal layers you'll have to isolate those on

    the board using cutout polygons since there's no restrict layer for them.

    connect to the pins when making a schematic with the device.

    Expected and normal behaviour should be that the "Net" automatically connects to the nearst

    pin within +- 2 grid steps.

    That would be a very bad behaviour, since often there are multiple pins

    within a +- 2 grid step radius. In EAGLE all of the library components

    are made to a 0.1 grid for the schematic symbol. We strongly recommend

    that you do not deviate from that on the schematic otherwise you're

    going to have a heck of a time trying to get everything to connect. For

    the layout use whatever is convenient but on the schematic don't deviate

    from 0.1"(2.54mm).
