Custom Component Naming Error

Former Member
Former Member over 12 years ago

Hi all,

My first post here, so apologies if I have set my post out wrong, or posted in the wrong place!

I am having an issue naming my custom components properly, ie getting Eagle to name them IC1, IC2, etc.

I believe on the schematic, you must enter the symbol editor and then set the name of the component to >NAME. This appears correctly next to my schematic symbol.

Then when you are in the device editor, it replaces the name with G$1 - which from my understanding of the manual is a placeholder, or the default name - no worries there. I then set the prefix to be IC.

However the problem arises when I place the symbol in a schematic. The name appears as IC1G$1. The numbers do increment, but I would prefer not to have the G$1 after IC1.

After again reading the manual, it says that G$1 should appear in the device editor, but should be replaced by the IC1 completely in the schematic. Does anyone have an idea of what I am doing wrong?

I have connected all the pins to the footprint.

If you would like screenshots to understand my problems easier, by all means let me know and I can sort them out for you.

Many thanks for your time,

Sparky

    Hi Sparky,

Check the addlevel of the part and make sure that it's set to Next and

not something else. Is this a multi-gated component? If it is, then for

the extra gates you would change the gate name to A,B,C, etc. or some

    other naming convention.

    We'll go from there.

I have connected all the pins to the footprint.

Many thanks for the reply Jorge.

I have made sure the step is "next", and although it is not multi-gated, I have seperated the supply pins to alow me to produce cleaner schematics ( I don't want these to be hidden, however). Perhaps that is where the problem is? I have attached a screenshot below.

I have managed to figure it out!

Instead of typing in >NAME for each symbol, >PART provides just the IC number without the G$ part at the end.

It provides the correct visual form I'm after, but if this is a fudge, I would still appreciate any help. image

    Many thanks again.

    Michael

    Hi,

it seems your screenshot looks like multigate. A Gate for the

    inputs/outputs. A Gate for supply.

Your workaround with >Part instead of >Name is a possible way.

Even though the thread is a few years old, I had the same question and >part didn't work for me. So just in case others ask this in the future like I did... Finally figured it out though and it's adding a prefix in the device editor.
