Pad with complex hole

eugeny

Hello, connector has its through-hole chassis pin 2.4 x 1 mm size, what is the right way to create pad for it?

SMD pad with holes give errors, hole without pad leaves space with no copper around the hole (0.2 mm clearance is required by PCB manufacturer).

Please advise.

Sadly, the picture link is not working (website is temp broken), maybe it will come back in a few hours. Since I can't see anything, I'm assuming you plan to "drill" the non-circular hole using laser cutting…

By the way it sounds like you are trying to create this internal "hole" using the dimension layer. I don't know if that it really correct, since this should be used to form the "outer" border/perimeter…

Your description is not clear to offer full help..

You say the shape of the pin is 2.4 x 1 mm?   So any round hole must be

2.4mm for the pin to fit.  This post did not mention center-to-center

spacing of the pins, this is critical.

Since this is not a surface mount part, you will not use surface mount

    packages

Thanks. Let me rephrase the question.

I need hole in the PCB of 2.4 x 1 mm size with plating around it (but better with plating in it like in pad).

As you see this is not a round hole.

It has nothing to do with spacing, pitch or whatever.

I just need one hole of defined size and defined properties at the center of the 10 x 10 mm PCB.

Do not ask me why image

Sadly, the picture link is not working (website is temp broken), maybe it

will come back in a few hours.

Since I can't see anything, I'm assuming you plan to "drill" the

non-circular hole using laser cutting, since it is not a "hole" in the

sense of Eagle, I'm not sure how you can force the interior edge of the

hole to be plated from topside to bottom.

Putting copper on the top (and bottom)SURFACES by force is simple, just

place a "wire" (use wire selection in pcb drawing) having the width,

dimensions, and position you desire over the "hole".  To minimize false

errors, give the wire the same net name as the net associated with your

    "hole".

Norm, thank you very much for

    >Putting copper on the top (and bottom)SURFACES by force is simple, just place a "wire"

I did not think about such solution - I was trying SMD pads or polygons.

However your solution gives "dimension" error in DRC - both for circular hole (drill) and for any shape drawn in dimension layer. Is there any approved way for having same result, but without error?

You could triple check you layout & just bluntly approve this error & move

    ahead with the work.

Or, you might need to adjust your min allowable "dimensions" in the various

DRC configuration tabs  (PCB, TOOLS==>DRC).  Or set up a special class for

this net.  I'm sure others will weigh in with even better proposals.

By the way it sounds like you are trying to create this internal "hole"

using the dimension layer.  I don't know if that it really correct, since

this should be used to form the "outer" border/perimeter of the pcb.  I

suspect any copper crossing over the dimension border will always generate

    an error.

Perhaps you should generate your "hole" using the layer 47 "milling".  I'm

just tossing out thoughts, since I haven't used layer 47 myself.

In fact I just now searched the word "milling" & found this post, you may
