I have recently purchased Hobbyist/Non Commercial License for 7.2.0 for Linux. There is a new version now available (7.3). May I use the purchased licesnse for 7.2 on the new version?

You have a 7.x.x license and imho that is valid for all 7.x.x versions
You can check yourself at the cadsoft homepage.

Hello Joern,
Thank you for your answer.
This is promising! But how do you do it? When, in Help->EAGLE License,I press 'use license file' and I point to eagle.key under ~/eagle-7.2.0/bin/eagle.key and enter 10 digit serial number I received with original purchase, the error message is displayed.
The error reads : "the file ... is an installed key file. Please select a license file received from CadSoft." I don't remember how I retrieved original key. I believe I've downloaded it from the CadSoft server at one point (it was 1/2 year ago and I don't remember).
All I have is an email form Cadsoft (packing list) with download instructions.

Hi Bob,
I followed instructions, but I am still at the same point: I can only run 30 days trial. Perhaps it something to do with Linux x64 version. Anyway I downloaded 7.3.0 (again) and when I run downloaded file (sh eagle-lin64-7.3.0.run), it asked me for the original license file (which name is serial number with key extension). I browse to it and then it asks me to "Type in the Installation Code(ten lower case letters):" What am I supposed to enter? Again what I have is an origina email from Cadsoft when I purchesed 7.2.0 back in February 2015 asking me to visit http://shop.cadsoftusa.com/license ,enter serial # and enter 16 character code within 4 weeks of origial purchase.... I am confussed.
Cheers,
Tad
PS I am running latest Kubuntu 14.10
PSS When I etered original 16 character code, at Cadsoftusa error displayed is( which is what I expected - after 4 weeks it got removed):

I bet the file you had in the 7.2 version will work in the 7.3. Do you have old version still?

Wait, you know its well past 4 weeks since Februrary, but yet you are
confused why the process won't work!? What part of "4 weeks" is so
confusing to you?

Hello Guest,
Perhaps my original question was not very clear, but your answer is not very helpful, too. I already have perfectly working Eagle 7.2 displaying under Help-> About EAGLE that I have Hobbyist License matching the serial number of my original purchase. All I want is to install on the same PC, Eagle 7.3.0, to which I understand I have right w/o any additional fee. I followed the upgrade procedure (https://shop.cadsoftusa.com/en/upgrade/) suggested by Bob Alexander above and I could not complete it because when asked to "Type in the Installation Code (ten lower case letters):" it did not know what to type, since original installation of 7.2 was in February... I am going to contact CadSoft US and when I get the answer I will update my colleagues on this forum.
Is any one of you managed to upgrade Eagle from 7.2 to 7.3 on the Linux platform and if so on what distribution and version?

Tad Dragowski
Hokay ... now I think we know what your problem is.
For every Eagle install, there are typically two codes :
License Code
Installation Code (10 digit)
When you register/buy you will typically get both (unless like me you bought through Farnell, in which case, for some reason you typically only got the license code - go figure).
When that happens, you have to contact the licensing team at CadSOFT and get them to send you an installation code.
You need *both*, and as far as I am aware, this is needed for all platforms - I *know* that it is needed for OSX and Windows, but I'm not so sure about Linux - I would have thought so.
So - contact licensing at CadSOFT. Have the purchase details (if you've got a copy of the invoice/whatever) then all the better and make sure that you send them the license code. They *should* be able to send you the appropriate license code (don't loose it).
As to why CadSOFT needs both codes ... no idea ... just that they do. Its a right and royal pain in the a**** and historically it hasn't been particularly well documented (it should feature at the top of the FAQs in regard to licensing - not sure if it does these days or not - I haven't looked for a while).
/BGM
P.S. To install Eagle to begin with, you typically need the installation code so you *should* have had it at some stage. The only way I could think where that may have changed was when they conducted their little 'licensing experiment' (the people responsible for that one should be beaten with a stick).

Hi Tad, hi Brendon,
you initially got a link from where to download your license data.
It was a license file named "serialnumber".key and there was shown
your personal installation code consisting of ten lower case letters.
These two things are needed again for licensing 7.3.
Tad, you mentioned the file eagle.key. That's not the file EAGLE needs
for the licensing process. It's "serialnumber".key.
Maybe that's the issue?
If not, feel free to contact our office....

Hi Richard and Brendon,
Thank you both for clarification.
I am away traveling, but it all starts to make sense:
- when I purchased the license CadSoft sent me email with attachment cadosft-packing-list-yyyy.pdf. It contained 10 character serial number and 16 digit download code
- using above, from http://shop.cadsoftusa.com/en/license I downloaded xxx.key file - license data (text file with meta data and encoded security key).
- then while running downloaded 7.2.0 Eagle, under Help->License, I selected Use License File, I entered 10 digit serial number and 10 digit license code and 7.2 was happy.
I will call CadSoft to get license code and try again on Wednesday.

Tad Dragowski
