grouping permanent

e14 Contributor
e14 Contributor over 10 years ago

Hi

It would be useful to group some Parts in SCH and in BRD permanently (lock/unlock function) to modify (move, mirror, etc) them together. For example a Diode together with a Heat sink, a LED together with a light guide. This behavior should be stored in the XML files too to be permanent.

Cheers

Martin

    Martin Fürst idea is good and permanent grouping is a missing basic function. This function should at least have these specifications:

    - a group could hold any elements: part, wire, via, polygon ...

    - lock the relative position of all the elements of group;

    - the group absolute position should be lockable / un-lockable (like parts)

    - the group should be permanent (store in to the brd/sch file)  (@ Clem : I don't see how you manage to to this last point with ulp....)

    Hi,

    - adding / removing any single element/object/component to/from a permanent group with a simple click: too many times I spent costly minutes in annoying selections with group polygon tool and/or hiding/showing layers to avoid useless or harmful selections.

    you're right, this would be great !

    I agree with your suggested specifications. I would also add to those:

    - adding / removing any single element/object/component to/from a permanent group with a simple click: too many times I spent costly minutes in annoying selections with group polygon tool and/or hiding/showing layers to avoid useless or harmful selections.

    - use the Group tool to lock / unLock more than a single element (I never figured out how to do this, if any similar function exists)

    - improving the whole grouping system shifting it to a more friendly way: selection with left click, multiple selection with polygon (rectangle, guys, rectangle! CorelDraw did this in 1990!), add to/ remove from a group with shift+left click on the object.

    Marginal note: I also posted some suggestions (perhaps not my best contribution to the Eagle world, but... hey, worth a try), but after three weeks I have received no reply, no comment, nothing. The suggestion newsgroup on CadSoft site looks unreachable (error 404). I think the big Eagle's users community could bring a huge amount of suggestions in order to transform Eagle in the best EDA software, but - I may be wrong - CadSoft seems to be deaf from that ear...
