Eagle 7.6.0 constantly crashing - what to do?

Hi everyone. I'm at a loss as to how to handle this situation.

I'd been using Eagle freeware for about a month flawlessly, but over the last two weeks or so I can barely do more than 5 minutes of work without it crashing and burning (well, not exactly burning.)

Simple things like zooming in and out of a schematic, scrolling in a schematic, or even clicking on a button on a toolbar will cause it to crash. So far I've spent most of my time in the schematic editor, so I'm not 100% sure if it also happens in the PCB editor.

I'm running it on a Mac (10.10), and I was also seeing the same problem with 7.5.0. Rather conveniently 7.6.0 came out not long after I started seeing the crashes with 7.5.0, so I upgraded hoping that might help, but alas, 7.6.0 had the exact same problem.

I tried restarting, I completely deleted the Eagle application folder and re-installed, but neither of those did anything to help. Can anyone suggest anything else?

The first tell-tale signs its about to happen are when I start to see graphical glitches, like that in the attached screenshot. Then, a couple of clicks later, boom - crash. I'm at the stage where I'm constantly saving my work in fear of losing it.

I'm really really liking Eagle, and Ive been considering purcashing a license, but if its going to behave like this, I dunno ....... image

Many thanks.

Tom

I found that Ken Tyler's suggestion (above) actually worked for me. While it is a "workaround" solution, I'm finding that after resizing both the schematic and PCB layout windows, I am usually able to…

    Hi,

I have exactly the same problem, when I use multiple monitors. I have a MacBook Pro Retina connected via HDMI to a standard HD monitor, and if the external monitor is connected EAGLE will crash after a few minutes, usually when zooming in or out with the mousewheel. Crashes are often preceded by the graphic corruption described by Tom.

Maybe it's related to having a hi-dpi screen and a standard DPI screen in use at the same time?

The crashes still occur even if the external screen is 'mirroring' the laptop screen.

It's quite annoying having to unplug the big screen just to use EAGLE... but so far EAGLE still seems to be stable when using just the laptop screen.

    Thx, Kieran.

Thats interesting, because I also use an external screen on a MacBook Pro Retina.

I have had absolutely no stability issues with EAGLE on OS X since 7.1 when

I was having very rare abrupt crashes. I'm now running 7.5.3 on my iMac 5K

and 7.6.0 on my Macbook Pro Retina and it has been rock solid stable for a

long time. I have an external 5K monitor on my iMac so I don't think it's

directly related to having a second monitor. I am running the latest update

of 10.11 El Capitan which I have been for a long time, I wonder if this

could have an updated graphics driver that fixes some issues? I suspect it

does use later versions of AMD/Nvidia drivers so will probably include a

whole bunch of graphics related bug fixes.

As an aside as file locking has been brought up already, I did turn the

file locking "feature" off pretty much immediately after the first time it

did it's thing and annoyed me immensely. This stupid ill thought out

functionality should be classed as a bug not a feature and be removed! I

would be surprised if it were the cause of this crash though.

    Best Regards,

    Rachael
