Vista- files missing when searched for.

autodeskguest over 17 years ago

Hello,

I just installed EAGLE on a Windows Vista Home Premium laptop.

I can create projects and schematics, boards, and gerber plots. However,

when I try to find them in explorer, they are gone. I open eagle and they

are there.

Also, any library files I create are there for editing. I then go to

Libraries - Use to add them. The operation appears to complete, but when I

try to use them, to add the parts to the schematic, they are not .in the

list. I can find the libraries in EAGLE, but they will not load as active.

-

I did find an answer to the help files not working. It works on my machine:

"Thank you for contacting Microsoft Customer Service.

I understand that you would like to know which WinHlp32.exe file you should

download.

I would like to inform you that x86 or x64 are platform for Windows Vista.

To find out the platform of the Windows Vista, please perform the following

steps:

- Click on "Start"

- Type in "System" in the Start Search box

- Click on System Information in the Programs list

- The "System type" option has the platform you are using

Jeffrey, for more information about finding the platform please visit the

article "How to determine whether your computer is running a 32-bit version

or a 64-bit version of the Windows operating system":

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827218

After you determine the platform you are using, you may download the

appropriate WinHlp32.exe file from the web link below:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=6EBCFAD9-D3F5-4365-8070-334CD175D4BB&displaylang=en

I don't use Vista, but I wonder if Vista "thinks" your files are somehow

special and has hidden them?  Try displaying hidden files and

    see waht happens.

Vista is very protective of the Program Files directory. You're not

supposed to store data there, such as your Projects directory.

Your projects are most likely under 'Users\your_name\'. Use the Search

to look for them, but be sure to choose the Advanced search, and Search

the entire drive. Otherwise they will be missed. You may have to add the

paths to your Options->Directories window just off the opening screen.

You got it!  I will try changing the paths to be specific instead of

    "$EAGLEDIR\

Tried:   c:\program files\eagle-rev\ for all directory settings. Still saves

    any

and all new files in the 'Users\your_name\VirtualStore\Program Files\

    eagle-rev directory.

Will try various configurations and get back to you.

    Jeffrey...

I wasn't at my Vista machine when I wrote the last message - this time I am.

On my installation, the CAM, DOC, DRU, LBR, ULP, SCR directories are in

the Program Files directory (not a good idea, but DOC is probably OK).

    Eaglerc.usr.beta is in C:\Users\your_name\AppData\Roaming\CadSoft\Eagle.

The project files are in C:\Users\your_name\Documents\Eagle\Project.

This last location requires that you add '$HOME\EAGLE' to your

Options->Directories pop-up in Eagle (in the Project window).

The problem with having libraries, scripts etc. in the Program Files

directory is that Vista will refuse to download new libs or ulps etc.

from the CadSoft website (or anywhere else for that matter). On-line or

network access to Program Files is forbidden. The only way to get them

downloaded is to make the download to another directory (I use

'doctemp') and then copy or move them to the Program Files directory.

    Just a little added fuss.

I'm going to try to move all of the auxiliary directories to the same

location under Users with the Projects. Should work (I hope).

OOPS!!! I just realized that I gave locations for the Beta version of

Eagle. I don't have 4.16r2 installed on the Vista machine. (I'm

currently moving everything from an 8 yr old laptop to a new one.)

I think the file locations above should still be basically correct as

the Beta version hasn't really changed the file access behavior from

4.16. The big changes are in Vista's file structure.

Ignore the location for eaglere.usr.beta. You won't have that file.

Tried:   c:\program files\eagle-rev\ for all directory settings. Still

    saves any

and all new files in the 'Users\your_name\VirtualStore\Program Files\

    eagle-rev directory.

Will try various configurations and get back to you.

    Jeffrey...

I wasn't at my Vista machine when I wrote the last message - this time I

    am.

This

last location requires that you add '$HOME\EAGLE' to your

Options->Directories pop-up in Eagle (in the Project window).

The problem with having libraries, scripts etc. in the Program Files

directory is that Vista will refuse to download new libs or ulps etc. from

the CadSoft website (or anywhere else for that matter). On-line or network

access to Program Files is forbidden. The only way to get them downloaded

is to make the download to another directory (I use 'doctemp') and then

copy or move them to the Program Files directory. Just a little added

    fuss.

I'm going to try to move all of the auxiliary directories to the same

location under Users with the Projects. Should work (I hope).

    HTH,

    Jack Butler

Got it figured out. EAGLE runs fine as is.

    1. However, all modified files are stored in:

    "C:\Users\Jeff\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\EAGLE-rev\"

I can get at them there, but what a hassle.

2.Another way to get EAGLE to work in the usal way is to give it admin

    rights.

Right click on the exe file in "c:\Program Files\EAGLE-rev\bin\eagle.exe"

and select "Run as administrator." Still a hassle.

    3. This is great! Permanent admin rights and can be started from the usual

    desktop icon or start menu.

Right click on the exe file in "c:\Program Files\EAGLE-rev\bin\eagle.exe"

and select Properties, then the security tab, then edit and accept the

anoying dialog box if it pops up, last click on Users (computer name\users)

check the full control box and the apply button. Exit out and viola, the

program runs as it always did in previous Windows Versions.

I know, it is not advised to run it this way, but I am used to EAGLE

    running as it was designed.

Hope this is useful to others.
