A disgusted problem —— the keyboard is often locked by EAGLE

Former Member

Hi everyone

Several weeks ago, I changed the OS from Win7 to  Fedora. Fortunately, the EAGLE can be used under Fedora and its UI is highly similar to what it is in Win7. But when I began to work with it, a problem occurred. After I added a component into a scheme, and then canceled the adding by pressing ESC, as same as I usually did in Win7, the keyboard was locked. That means, I couldn't type anything and even couldn't close a dialogbox by pressing ESC anymore. I didn't know what happened at the time. So I planed to close the EAGLE. But to my surprise, when I tried to save  the scheme, I couldn't type filename. Another words, the keyboard was completely locked. I forced to close the EAGLE then opened it again. All were OK. But latter, due to some unknown reasons, the problem occurred again and again. I realized that it's not a accident. So I googled it but couldn't get any valuable information. Has anybody here ever met this problem? Is anybody here can give some advice to solve it?

Best regards.

You write the keyboard was locked, but you could move/use the mouse.

Could you type something for example in a terminal window or in

    another application in this situation?

What when you are pressing escape in another situation in EAGLE,

let's say with the ROUTE command acive? Is the keyboard locked as

    well then?

FWIW I've had this problem, not Fedora but Open SuSE and it turned out

to be a faulty PS2 keyboard.  Oddly a USB keyboard worked just fine and

plugging in a USB keyboard worked even when the PS2 one didn't !

Yes, the keyboard is OK in another applications for example a terminal window. With the ROUTE command avtive, and when I press ESC, it will quit ROUTE mode immediately. The keyboard will not be locked under this situation. It seems that the problem only occurs in schematic mode.

Let me describe the problem step by step again:

    1) Opened EAGLE.

    2) Created a new project.

    3) Created a new schematic in the project.

    4) Tried to add a componet. A componet category dialogbox appeared.

    5) Here I want to add a resistor. So I selected the certain component. A R1 appeared in schematic. And, after that, the software was still in adding mode. I could see an other resistor which color is red floated above the schmatic. Of course I could directly add it by just clicking mouse. But I didn't want to add resistors anymore. So I pressed ESC. The category dialogbox appeared again. I pressed ESC again. Another words, I continuely pressed ESC twice. OK, that problem occured!

P.S. The OS I am using is Fedora15 and the language is Simplefied Chinese.

    Best regards

    Many thanks for Baron's advice.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work for my computer. It is a DELL-101Z. And I don't know which kind of keyboard it is. But when the problem occures, I try to plug a external USB keyboard, the problem permanently is image

Furthermore, even I started a new work and only use the external USB keyboard, the problem occured as before.

Could you please check whether it is possible to lock the keyboard

by presing Esc key twice or more times in any other situation in EAGLE?

I had a new find! The problem only occurs when I try to clean the adding components dialogbox too quickly. What I mean is, when I succeed adding a componet into schematic and needn't more adding, I usually cancel the execution by pressing ESC twice. After the 1st pressing, the dialogbox appears, as I do want to exit, the 2nd pressing will be performed without stopping. After that, the keyboard is locked. If I stop a moment between the twice pressing, for example wait about one second, all will be OK.

And, I did a varity of tests as per Hammerl's advice. It seems that only adding components can cause the problem.

I followed Rui's directions and couldn't reproduce the problem (Open

    SuSE 11.1), Eagle 5.10...

It does sound like some kind of "race" issue in Fedora.

    HTH.

Yes. It's probably a kind of "race" issue, but I don't think it's about Fedora, I guess it's about GNOME. Because I tried it on an oher computer which runs Linuxmint11, the problem occured once time again. They are all use GNOME. For OpenSUSE, I'm not sure, I never used it. But I heard that it's based on KDE. Later I'll try.

    Thanks for Baron.

Yes I use the KDE 3.5.10 desktop on Open SuSE 11.1.

I find KDE 4 almost unusable in comparison.  Why on earth they decided

to alienate users by doing a wholesale dump and re-write, rather than a

    phased introduction...

I belive that Open SuSE is going to prefer Gnome to KDE in the next

release.  I'll not hold my breath...
