Library management commands

larsen
larsen over 13 years ago

I am evaluating the tool but after a short while of use I am having serious problems managing my self-made library.

How do I - inside a library:

Delete, Rename or Copy a: symbol, device or package?

It is _so_ easy to create new items (this has a prominent place in the select dialog), but it is difficult to rename or get rid of them again.

The remove/ rename command seems not to function or more likely I dont use it properly yet I follow the manual page 271. It fails saying that it cant find the item, yet it is there for sure.

Without this maintenace functionalty my library rapidly becomes messy and cloged up.

Hope for some hints.

You don't say if you are using version 5.x or 6 - at least in version 5.12,

if I open my library, click package and select the one I want to rename,

this brings it up in the library editor window.  Then, if I click Library

on the menu, the menu that comes up has a number of options.  Two of them

are "Remove" and "Rename".  I have used both previously and they worked for

me.  Have not tried it in 6 yet (still learning it myself - I have enough

bugs without running into Eagle bugs

Thanks for that information. I would NEVER, EVER have used these menu

items, because I always thought they would remove or rename the LIBRARY.

CadSoft: This is another example of insufficient menu item text. The

menu item 'Library - Rename' SEEMS to mean 'rename library', because

that's EXACTLY what it tells the user. What it really MEANS is 'rename

device' or 'rename symbol' or 'rename package', so PLEASE put the

additional word into the menu to clear things up.

I've used EAGLE for 20 years and didn't know that this function was

there due to this unclear menu wording. What a shame to both CadSoft and

    me...

For what it's worth, this is a reason I periodically copy my library to a

00_mylib_test.lbr - it is a junk library that I can experiment with and not

shoot myself in the foot (at my advanced age, I have learned that is not a

good thing).  There are enough things in Eagle (like not using "wire" to

wire a schematic ! to make me careful what I do.  Great program, but

somewhat less than "intuitively obvious" image  )
