Eagle 6 : unable to rename a via ?

Former Member
Former Member over 13 years ago

Hi,

In Eagle V6.0.0, i was unable to rename a via, for example: I added a new via to the board and wanted to rename it as GND. I am used to do this in order to make ground planes connections in RF designs. With older versions of Eagle, there was no difficulty to do this.

Eagle 6.0.0 says: "Can not backannotate this operation. Please do this in the schematic!". But in the schematic, I don't know how to retrieve the via and rename it image

Could you advice how to do this with Eagle 6.0.0?

Thanks in advance.

You should update to ver.6.1.2 which has corrected lots of errors and at

    least there it works.

Are you sure the via has not already a signal's name?

For example, it happens when you place a via on a net endpoint: the via

gets the signal's name and you can't rename the via anymore (because

you're renaming the whole signal and this cannot be done in layout).

This applies to EAGLE V5 too.

You have to ripup the via and placing it again.

I placed the vias on the ground plane, but the via keeps his net which is automatically attributed. I would be happy to get the net name GND when placing the via on an existing ground plane. I did'nt know that.

    Thank you for your reply.

I checked on the download area on Cadsoft web site, but they have only the 6.1.0 version. Where can I get the 6.1.2 ?

    Regards

In Eagle 5 I place my ground vias by name: instead of clicking on the

"via" box, I go to the command line and type via 'gnd' (or via gnd -- I

can't remember whether you need the quotes on that command).  Then all of

the vias that I place are already on the ground net, and I don't have to

    mess with renaming them.

I haven't used Eagle 6, but I sincerely hope that it works the same way.

Thanks, Tim. This is a good idea. I try the command via 'gnd' and it works. The quotes are necessary.
