Newbie Eagle Questions

Hello,

I'm trying to make my first PCB in Eagle, and I have been running into two problems which I think may be related.

I'm using surface mount components, and with some of my parts, I can not get the program to recognize that a trace is connected to the pad.  I am testing if devices are connected by picking up the component after placeing the trace and rotating it to see if the end of the trace "sticks" to the pad.  Sometimes they do and other times they don't, which leads to all sorts of ERC errors (it says the schematic and PCB are inconsistent).

The second problem, which I'm pretty sure is being caused by the first issue, is that I'm getting many DRC Overlap and Stop Mask errors and the points where my traces and pads are supposed to connect (which suggests to me that the program things I'm trying to route the trace on top of the pad instead of connecting to it).

Is there a way for me to get the traces to "snap" to the pad when I try to make a connection?

Thanks

    I think I found it,

If I first use "Define Electrical Connection", to link the pads I want to connect, then use the "Rout Manually" command instead of "Line/Wire", everything seems to work out alright.

I think  you do something generally wrong. Check

options/setting/miscellaneous and see that the hook is set to "Set

junctions automatically". You must use NET to make connections between

parts. Don't use WIRE, because that is just a line.

Once you have generated a board you must have open BOTH, .sch & .brd to

    keep consistency.

Once that is lost you must restore it, because otherwise the board can

not follow the sheet and vice versa when adding or removing parts.

If you have not done layouts in your board, the most easy way is to

delete it and generate a new one to get back consistency.

If you don't want to throw away your board you must use the ERC and work

down the list of inconsistency errors.

See that the DRC settings fit your suits. The DRC checks only activated

layers. So deactivate the stop layer for example.

In the eagle doc directory you can find a manual and a tutorial and the

eagle help is available by just hitting the F1 key.
