Eagle 5.4.0 started crashing, Windows SP sp3

blewis999
blewis999 over 17 years ago

Eagle has started terminating, I have loaded no new programs or

drivers. I tried rolling windows back to when the system was stable.

Only Eagle is crashing, none of the other programs have this problem.

Has anyone else encountered this, and if so what can be done. I tried

re-installing but same problem. Although I did install into the same

directory and just overwrote the files.

I reverted to my windows restore point of three weeks ago which was

well before I installed Eagle 5.4.0... to make sure that the OS was

solid then. I did not install any software and ran the system for

    several days doing a lot of intense CPU work with videos and audio;

there wasn't a single problem. I also did not re-install Agent News

Reader so was unable to post, thinking that maybe Agent was the

    problem.

Today I re-installed Eagle 5.4.0 and it crashed on right clicking on

an existing file in the 'open a file' dialog. I think there are

problems with the file access interface. This is where I have seen it

    terminate before.

The 'open a file' dialog is the native Windows file dialog.

    - What are you trying to achieve by right clicking on an item

      in that dialog?

    - When you right click, does a menu pop up, or does it crash

      before that menu pops up?

    - If a menu pops up, can you send me a screen shot of the dialog

      with that menu?

    - If you get as far as clicking on a menu option, which one is

it, and does EAGLE crash immediately after you click on that

option, or is there some more activity (like a screen redraw

or something like that) before the crash?

    - Does ist also crash if you don't right click on an item, but

rather double click with the left mouse button?

Here is the question! Is there anyway to export my libraries or board

and go back to Eagle 4.16r1? That was stable and I can get by without

the new features for the present, but I can't get by with not getting

    the work done!!

    Thanks

I hope this provides some insight Klaus.  This problem has happened several

times over the last couple of months while running Eagle.  It may fall in

line with some conversation we had several months ago regarding Win Crashes

    while doing Manual File Saves.

There was an occasional problem with renaming temporary files on Windows in

case the new file name already exists. This has been fixed in version 5.4.3.

Other than that I'm not aware of any file saving problems on Windows.

If find a reproducible set of actions that cause a problem, please

    let me know.

Unfortunately, Eagle 5.4.0 just terminated again but this time there

are no events in the system log.

I am not sure what to do... I do not have any other app's terminating.

I just upgraded from Eagle 4.16r1 and have never had that version

crash. I used 4.16r1 up to the time I installed 5.4.0 without problem

and did no system upgrades between the install of 5.4 and using 4.16.

Can I export my libraries from 5.4.0 and re-import them into 4.16r1?

    Or even copy them?

    Thanks

Are you getting any more specific error messages? Something that

    Hi Klaus and all

Firstly we are all probably in the Wrong area for Bug discussion, but to

keep the thread unbroken I return this comment here. Previous reply is

above - Brownie - with system details.

I just installed 5.4.4 and decided that since the Win system should always

be rebooted after any software install - even if it does no Registry

entry - we should run through a system cleanup - delete Junk Files.

In looking under the root there was a File000.chk.  These are generated when

there has been a system scan done - usually after some crash and reboot.

We looked at the files with X-Tree Gold (very old Dos file manager that one

must use with extreme caution under Win) binary viewer.  Both of the files

were orphaned BUT complete files (based on the file sizes compared to Good

files in the Project folder) generated from Eagle.  I'm sure that Eagle

does NOT leave Loaded Files OPEN as some windows programs do.  There for my

only best guess is that Eagle may have been trying to do an Auto-Save when

Win took it's vacation.  This may fall in line with Mr. Lewis's comment

    above here.

Win does perform sporadic disk writes of it's own - anyone know why?

Maybe this problem is so unpredictable because it's'  such a crap shoot to

know if Win is about to do a disk write.  I don't think Win cares what else

is going on so there could be some conflict if programs that do writes

don't delay a bit if Win is busy.  Just a long-shot Guess.

Thanks for allowing me the privilege to express my hopefully not too

    ignorant viewpoint.

    Regards All,

    Brownie

this doesn't apply to Eagle IMO. You can unpack the Eagle archive and

just start Eagle - no installation needed at all.

You don't want to reboot Windows after each program start?

BTW: Since using W2K, I reboot Windows every month or so - in the

mean, I just "hibernate" the system (staying logged in, of course).

There is a good change that your Windows installation is broken.

This doesn't seem to be Eagle related.

    Hi,

I too have had Win XP SP2 totally crash while running Eagle but have

attributed the crash to another of Win's' goofy frailties.  BUT...  the

systen is used to do many other tasks and has not crashed.

    Win XP-SP2

    2 Gig Ram

    Sata 140 Gig

    Pent core 2 2.6Ghz

On Motherbd Display using shared ram

The only thing I can think that might make Eagle crash is some memory leak

in the C-code.  Knowing the attention to detail by the Eagle team this does

not seem to be a likely cause.

I submit this just in case someone else had this and did not know why.

It's a very infrequent occurrance and I can not easily duplicate it.

    Regards,

    Brownie

I found the problem; this is not Eagle at all but Windows XP. The

problem was when I did a file operation such as search for a directory

inorder to open a new schematic or to save a schematic or board. The

    error is

    " Event 8003

The master browser has received a server announcement from the

Now to find out why the event is occuring. Someone could make some

serious money if they could design a windows system that worked and

didn't die with these bizarre errors for no reasonable reason at all.

    Thank you for the help.

It should be mentioned that this can happen on WinXp if registry is

corrupted. It didnt crash until a spesific key was touched. I had this issue

    with some other sw.

I could create the crash by starting regedit.exe, search for a value that

doesnt exist (F3, then type some crap).. If it crashes, the registry is

    corrupt.

I had to go way back in system restore to recover this.
