Error using Mirror tool.. ...

Hi All,

 

I'm using Eagle v6.6.0 standard edition, and I'm encountering an error when

I try to move a component to the backside of the board using the mirror

tool. The error is "The Standard Edition of Eagle cannot perform the

Requested operation", and "Some objects extend outside the allowed board

area".

 

My board size is 5" x 3.5", and the component easily fits on the frontside

of the board and Eagle is happy about it. The component outline itself is

3.7" x 2.8", so it seems like in the act of mirroring that Eagle perceives

the component to be outside the allowable area?

 

The component in question is for a GLCD module, and simply consists of a 20

pin header, 4 mounting holes, and the part outline.

  • Hi John,

     

    Is the package centred on it's origin or has the package been created with the origin on one corner? If it's been placed on a corner then mirroring it will mirror it on that corner such that part of the part would end up partially outside the board. If this is the case then you'll need to edit the part to centre it so that when it's mirrored it mirrors about its centre and sits directly below where it was on the bottom side.

    Hi Rachel,

     

    OK, many thanks! Yes, the part has its origin at one corner, so I'm sure

    that is what is going on! This origin location is desirable for placement

    purposes, but I can work around that issue as long as I can get the part on

    the backside!

    Don't use the mirror tool directly. Use the "MOVE" tool to pick it up,

    then click the middle button to mirror it and move it back onto the

    valid board area before placing it.

    Yes that's a good suggestion! Except if you are using a mac and have no middle button of course....

    At this point the Element is stuck to the mouse.

    Then, in the 'Parameter Toolbar' click on 'Mirrored'

    The element is now mirrored on the mouse

    Lastly place the element where you need it, within the edition constraints

    My post explained why mirror didn't work in your situation and how to fix

    it so that it does (I make all my components centred on their origin so

    that rotate/mirror work reliably) but Rob and Warren are quite right that

    the best solution in your case is simply to use the MOVE command and use

    its inbuilt mirroring capability. Sorry if my oversight made you alter your

    component unnecessarily....
