TDK-Lambda Americas, a group company of the TDK Corporation, has introduced a new line of “green” 250-watt power supplies that comply with the European energy saving requirements of the ErP (Energy related Products) Directive. Ideal for use in industrial, broadcast, and communications applications, the series AC-DC power supplies employ innovative design techniques to combine high efficiency, high power density and low standby power consumption (<0.5W, no-load) with the confidence of a 5-year warranty. The is equally well suited for indoor as well as outdoor applications, including: LED information displays, digital signage, traffic controls, test and measurement and audio/visual systems.
Designed with a 4.1 x 7.8 inch footprint and less than 1U height (1.61”), the is a compact, convection-cooled power supply that fits into spaces previously requiring fan-cooled supplies. Rated at 250W, this series is offered in four models with nominal outputs of 12V, 24V, 36V and 48V. Outputs are user adjustable by up to 20% depending on the model – and the 24V and 36V models have a peak power rating of 300W. With a very flat efficiency curve averaging 92.7% from 25 to 100% load, the series can be operated at full load from -25 to +50°C ambient temperature and up to +70°C with suitable derating. Since the is convection-cooled and does not have a fan, it is ideal for applications requiring low audible noise as well as for equipment where long life is a critical factor, such as in remote locations and dusty environments.
The series includes overvoltage, overtemperature and overcurrent protections. Models also feature <0.5W no-load power consumption, 5V/0.3A standby output, remote on/off, DC GOOD signal and a programmable output function, as standard.
CE marked in accordance with the LV Directive, the carries a host of environmental and safety approvals including EN55022 and FCC Class B, UL60950-1, CSA C22.2 No.60950-1-07 (cUL), EN60950-1 edition 2 and IEC60950-1.

Meeting Future ErP Requirements Today
Within the EU (European Union) in November 2009 the EuP (Eco-design Directive for Energy-using Products) was replaced by the new ErP (Energy-related Products Directive, 2009/125/EC). One of the first measures implemented under the ErP Directive relates to the no-load power consumption. Initially, this has been set at less than 1W. However, it is expected to drop to below 0.5W by January 2013. With this in mind, TDK-Lambda designed the GWS series with less than 0.5W no-load standby power, helping designers achieve existing regulations now and ensuring that end systems are future proofed beyond January 2013.
