The new Raspberry Pi Compute Development Kit enables design engineers

  • Small and Powerful. SODIMM sized (6.5cm by 3cm) Raspberry Pi board contains the BCM2835 chip with 512MB RAM with an on board 4GB eMMC Flash memory for booting the OS.
  • Flexible and Rapid Prototype Development. A fully functional IO board is part of the development kit which supports an extensive GPIO and multiple connectors to help foster rapid prototype development with access to all of the BCM2835 functionality.

    Its just who develops an IO-board first, with only ethernet, GPIO (USB?) and power (on the same side). Sadly not me, Id really like to test them!

    I do not know why Raspberry insist on using Micro USB, and not a barrel, to supply power. The USB 2.0 standard clamps to 500mA. The design requires more than that, up to 750mA at least, to be available.

     

    I would not expect Micro USB to handle 2A or tension. Obviously, nowhere near as robust as the 1/10'th pitch pin headers. 1/10" is overkill for GPIO alone. The digital video in / out interfaces are so much cleaner.

     

    Are we able to use the VCC pin on GPIO headers to supply power, without bypassing the 5v and 3.3v regulators?

    I understand I can add all kind of modules and interfaces via the IO Board. Still I think it's a missed change to not add an Ethernet port to the IO Board. With it it can be used directly for most IoT projects, without it it becomes a stack of add-on boards which makes it vulnerable for errors ...
