Raspberry pi 2 doesn't boot

I've bought the new raspberry pie 2 and have installed noobs on it as is given on the pi community. But when I plug the device on, it displays a splash screen and some text after which the display shuts. I had noobs version 1.4.0 then. I downloaded and installed noobs version 1.4.1, after which the text panel shows the box where we can select the OS to be installed but crashes after that. I can't figure out the problem. Also, this is my first experience with the raspberry pi.

Try a higher amperage charger. Not a ridiculous amount, just 2-3 amps

If you bought it all from E14 then all you should need to do is put in the SD card, boot into NOOBS and pick openelec as your insTALLATION.  After that, you need to consider the rest of what your looking for.  Are you cutting the cable from service providers or just trying to watch the latest movies in theaters?  To cut the cable, look into TVHeadend , a video capture card and some digital TV equipment.  If you're trying to bypass ticket sales, do your research on Youtube.  Its out there...

If the SD card is from other sources, make sure it is formatted FAT16 (maybe 32...)

Anyway once its formatted, download NOOBS and uncompress the file, then move the resulting bunch of files and folders to the SD card.  Then your back to the first paragraph.

If you can't format it to a big enough size there are some low level windows/linux tricks you can try but are really beyond what it appears your abilities are and I don't want to be blamed for wiping your computer.  For that, Google and Youtube are your friends.

Thank you for the responses. So I've probably got a solution. First thing was that I changed the SD card. The new one works just fine! Also, I used a new power adapter which had a good power rating.I changed the config.txt file settings for the hdmi mode and the force. It displayed some text for a split second and then went blank. So there is some problem with the cable I suppose cause when I plugged on a normal hdmi input, it worked splendidly. Maybe ill try some other configurations to find the one that works best. Again, thank you.

The Troubleshooting Wiki is indeed the best place to start.  It includes a section on HDMI -> VGA converters with links to the other Wiki pages on that topic.

Changing the power supply won't work if the problem is the Micro USB cable.  Many cables have very thin conductors and you'll get a significant voltage drop if RasPi and its +5V peripherals (such as your HDMI -> VGA converter) draw a lot of current.  Robert Peter Oakes has an excellent 'blog on the subject: http://www.element14.com/community/community/raspberry-pi/blog/2014/03/07/raspberry-pi-usb-power-cables-crashing-and-other-problems

config.txt is in the SD card's boot partition.  This means you can edit it from a PC or Mac.  See instructions at the RasPi Wiki: http://elinux.org/R-Pi_configuration_file

    Hi aneeshk

Welcome to the world of Raspberry Pi, Firstly take a deep breath and know that almost every problem has been seen before. I use http://elinux.org/R-Pi_Troubleshooting to check out what may have happened. If you get the splash screen and then you get a Raspberry symbol(either 1 or 4) with lines below, the most common problem is the SDcard. Please document the kind of card and its speed and we can help. But please read the trouble shooting since it details many possible things, which we can help if you do not see the proper lights activate.
