Infrared

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infrared

image

Infrared radiation is electromagnetic radiation (EMR) with longer wavelengths than those of visible light, and is therefore invisible to the human eye.

Most of the thermal radiation emitted by objects near room temperature is infrared.

Infrared was discovered in 1800 by astronomer Sir William Herschel, who discovered a type of invisible radiation in the spectrum lower in energy than red light, by means of its effect on a thermometer. Slightly more than half of the total energy from the Sun was eventually found to arrive on Earth in the form of infrared. The balance between absorbed and emitted infrared radiation has a critical effect on Earth's climate.

Thermography

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermography

image

Infrared thermography (IRT), thermal imaging, and thermal video are examples of infrared imaging science. Thermographic cameras usually detect radiation in the long-infrared range of the electromagnetic spectrum (roughly 9,000–14,000 nanometers or 9–14 µm) and produce images of that radiation, called thermograms. Since infrared radiation is emitted by all objects with a temperature above absolute zero according to the black body radiation law, thermography makes it possible to see one's environment with or without visible illumination. The amount of radiation emitted by an object increases with temperature; therefore, thermography allows one to see variations in temperature.

When viewed through a thermal imaging camera, warm objects stand out well against cooler backgrounds; humans and other warm-blooded animals become easily visible against the environment, day or night. As a result, thermography is particularly useful to the military and other users of surveillance cameras.

image

Thermography has a long history, although its use has increased dramatically with the commercial and industrial applications of the past fifty years. Firefighters use thermography to see through smoke, to find persons, and to localize the base of a fire. Maintenance technicians use thermography to locate overheating joints and sections of power lines, which are a sign of impending failure. Building construction technicians can see thermal signatures that indicate heat leaks in faulty thermal insulation and can use the results to improve the efficiency of heating and air-conditioning units.

image

Thermal energy

Thermal images, or thermograms, are actually visual displays of the amount of infrared energy emitted, transmitted, and reflected by an object. Because there are multiple sources of the infrared energy, it is difficult to get an accurate temperature of an object using this method. A thermal imaging camera is capable of performing algorithms to interpret that data and build an image. Although the image shows the viewer an approximation of the temperature at which the object is operating, the camera is actually using multiple sources of data based on the areas surrounding the object to determine that value rather than detecting the actual temperature.

Nice build. The cover looks really useful, and your forced air will definately help. The links are great ... but now I might just have to buy some ... Mark

Is this a good price for this in NZ?

    IMO .... no not really.

The US price is USD$24.99 and converting to NZD makes it NZD$34.86 or thereabouts.

The Pi 3 is showing at NZD$51.52

There is a 15% tax (GST) on top of all the prices quoted.

Pi prices are manipulated a little to try to make it the same everywhere.

While the newer versions have increased, they are still good buying, and not really fair to use as a comparison.

So I do find it a bit hard to accept that $71.70 is worthwhile when comparing the import your on price and any markup should be offset by a better buy rate.

Unfortunately these aren't the only example where the extras cost more than the base component.

    Cheers

    Mark

In the US, the case and large back cover are the same price as the pi 3 (US$35)

It also comes with a LEGO Pi Camera Case and additional hardware for surface mount.

It is so handy, it should be an official Pi accessory.

Smarticase makes innovative cases for the pi.

I highly recommend this case. It is my fav by far.

It would be a great setup for a 3d printcontroller, low cost industrial automation, smart home iot and automation, POS and food service auto., and a vast number of other applications.

So far this pi is a night vision camera and ir thermal cam built on a full raspbian touch-capacitive desktop.

There is still plenty of space inside the back cover for additional components and connectivity.

I have considered the installation of gps, 9 dof, nfc/rfid. temp/press/humid sensor and rtc. The nfc/rfid board might not fit inside the cover with everything else. The gps requires adjustment of the cpu and config of uart with raspbian. his might conflict with additional hardware config.

I hope you can get your hands on the smartipi case. With all the mounting options, it has been the best pi experience.

There will be video footage of operation in the next few days. A few additional parts will be installed upon arrival.

Thank you very much for your time in viewing this post of my project. It has been a fun and exciting experience.

Element14 has a great price for this smartipi case.

Unfortunately e14 does not carry the back cover.

I've found a few other things where only some parts of a package are stocked.

Also some countries stock it, while others don't, which is a bit frustrating given that other products show as coming from UK/etc.

AUS/NZ has the smart case SMTNL CaseSMTNL Case  for NZ$70.17 in both styles.

    Thanks
