Update on Newark element14 customers 'delivery date of August 2012' questions

Hello element14 Community members,

Today we learned that some of our Newark element14 customers who've placed orders for the Raspberry Pi have seen their delivery dates suddenly change on our website's order backlog to August 2012.  This was an error caused by our website. Please be assured that all orders will be shipped in the order they were originally received. No one has lost their place in line as a result of this issue.  All deliveries are currently on hold awaiting the outcome of the compliance testing taking place.  Once this testing is complete we will be better able to communicate accurate delivery dates so your Pi's can finally meet you, their owners!

We are sorry for all of the confusion this latest error has caused.  Thank you to those of you who have been posting your questions and comments to help us address and resolve issues quickly as possible.

Best,

Nicole, element14 Community Manager

    Hi Nicole,

you wrote "All deliveries are currently on hold awaiting the outcome of the compliance testing taking place."

FCC compliance testing has two classes, class A (commercial/industrial/business), and class B (residential), where class B is more strict.  Will class B compliance be required?

It seems as though the compliance testing that the Pi is currently undergoing is for "CE" compliance,. This is a European standard I believe. What if any additional testing will be required before the boards can be distributed in the U.S.? And if so, how much of an additional delay will we in the U.S. see before we can expect delivery of our devices?

They are doing FCC compliance testing at the same time as the CE as they are quite similar.

Now that testing is completed, do you have an update with a ship date?

If it was an issue with the website, after almost 2 weeks mine still says August 16.  Was originally April 3.

Can you please update us as to shipping dates?  Silence is not an acceptable answer

My status says the same August 2012 :-(

I phoned and talked to someone at Newark.

They said I could expect delivery in August as that is what is on my PO

When I said I heard that some were shipping now the lady I was talking with said she had seen a memo that dates on POs were going to change.  She could not tell me when they would change or what they would change to.

I asked what my position in the list of back orders was but she could not tell me that either.

I guess based on the latest news from the RPi foundation they have shipped about 2000 units.

I don't know how many people have ordered them but I am guessing it could be in the 100k to 500k range due to the interest I have seen on forums and number of people that have mentioned it.

To meet that type of demand if the production rate was 10k per week we would expect to wait between 10 and 50 weeks.  That is just my wild guess.  So August 2012 could actually be very optimistic :-)

Is there a way to determine our position on the waiting list?

    Thanks, Norm

You could do some research on the Raspberrypi.org website forum.  There are a number of threads where people that ordered from Farnell/Newark are talking about the date and time they ordered and using their Order Confirmation Number as a crude gauge of position on the list.

I've already been able determine that Newark in North America and Farnell in the UK are using two different Cfm # systems.  Farnell has an 8 or 9 digit number and Newark has a 6 digit number.  Based on the North American thread some people with cfm # around 160XXX are receiving theirs right now.  I personally am around 162xxx so I am about 2000 down the list from Americans getting them now.

We know that the RPi that are getting delivered now are likely part of the original 2000 out of the 10000 ordered by the RPF.  The remaining 8000 are likely going 4000/4000 to RS+Allied/Farnell+Newark.  We do know that the first 10000 are actually built.  The things we don't know are how many of the 4000+ that Farnell+Newark are getting actually go to the various parts of the world.  The forum I referred to has reports of deliveries in the US, UK and even Singapore, so we at least know that not all are going to the UK and that they are probably getting to those who got orders in early.

I've read many posts about people asking Farnell+Newark for the kind of information you are asking for, with no success.

    I hope this helps.
