Problems with initial boot up

Former Member
Former Member over 13 years ago

I've had no luck with starting my Pi, I've tried both Debian and Arch Linix downloads off the website, on different SD cards, and tried booting up the Pi but I am coming up with almost different messages each time but nothing works. The most common message it keeps coming up with is "Kernel Panic - not syncing: Fatal Exception in interrupt" . I'm at my whits end and the Pi is going to be put on ebay pretty soon, if I don't make some headway! I've been downloading and redownloading files all day. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

I dont have Pi, but what I have see so far is if the power supply is not good enough, it can maybe the problem, try booting without USB device to see if its related to the power. If it boot without message, its maybe your keyboard or mouse take too much power from the 5v power supply

    Reuben,

Farnell has been very good about promptly replacing faulty units,

no questions asked.   You really aren't expected to spend lots of

time and money trying to troubleshoot a $35 device, although some

people enjoy doing that, and in some cases have been able to get

a working system by trying different power supplies, power leads,

SD cards, keyboards, etc.  But even then, they may have been better off

getting a replacement that works with a wider range of accessories,

or is less flaky, if for example, the problem was a polyfuse with unusually

    high resistance.

Spot on, it is related the USB power however I have two keyboards and neither work and cause problems, I also have two power supplies, a Blackberry one and a Samsung one and neither make a difference. I'm not getting to the boot up screen but can't go any further as no keyboard will run on it, is no one else having these issues?

I am happy that the problem is now resolved!

What is the power supply Amp value, My guess is your power supply is under 1 amp (1000ma), the more Amp the more power you have. I bet a 2 Amp is ideal for a reaspberry pi when all USB device are used. The pi use 500ma i think, if your mouse use for example 300ma and add your keyboard 500ma, you are higher then the power supply power, also the voltage can drop more you add device...

I think now your best solution is to buy another power supply because it must be a low power one, I dont think its related to the keyboard, maybe it use a lot of power but my guess is more the power supply rated amp is low

    Reuben,

    you wrote:

Yes, unfortunately, lots of people are having these issues.

    googling for:

       "kernel panic" site:raspberrypi.org

    gets something like 721 hits.

The rpi.org site proudly features an article about the Boreatton Scouts

and their experience in troubleshooting what they suspect to be

power issues, with numerous trips to Maplins.

User mat80c on 10 May described the situation as:

"at the moment the whole thing is just one big bug hunt."

First port of call when there are problems should always be the eLinux wiki -- http://elinux.org/R-Pi_Troubleshooting

Once I have my Pi, I'll be helping to build up that very valuable info repository.  I've been working on the corresponding BeagleBone resources there, and it's been a pleasure.

I'm going to try sourcing a different power supply, both Samsung and Blackberry give 700mA which isn't much granted. How annoying though, that the point of the power supply was you were able to use any charger/PSU laying around! I've watched the Youtube clip from Eben saying he uses his with a Blackberry charger, how?. Suppose I'll be making a trip out later then to get a powered hub and PSU!

Ruben, I think you are far from alone having power problems. I have been lucky so far with an HTC phone charger. As I think has been commented elsewhere here, the original decision to use a phone charger, which at the time looked a good idea, seems to be quite the opposite now these units are being 'tested' agaisnt a variety of chargers. I think the basic problem (please correct me if I am wrong someone) is really in the name, these are phone *chargers* not power supplies.

I just got my RPi on Thursday. I prepped for months and had two power supplies, one Blackberry 700mA and one generic 1000mA I got off of eBay. They both work up to a point.

The Blackberry power supply is consistent, I guess because of quality.  I'm having problems with the Wifi adapter which appears to have the drivers loaded but from time to time drops off, though it never can connect to an AP. I believe this is power related.

As for the general 1A power supply, I can't even boot properly with the wifi adapter inserted and sometimes even with the Ethernet cable inserted. I guess it can provide up to 1A, but not consistently.  Bought from a UK based eBay seller, so is quality an issue?

Anyways, I'm waiting on a offer I made on eBay for a powered 7-port hub.  It's a version I've seen at least a half dozen times on blogs or forums where the users seem to be happy with it.  Maybe this will solve the power issues. My problem is that now I'll be having more and more cables running around.
