ASUS USB-N10 Wifi Adapter Installation Problems

Hi All

I've got my RPi up and running with wireless keyboard & mouse. Connected to the internet via a cable at the mo.

I'm trying to install the Asus USB-N10 wireless adapter to get rid of the cable.

I've downloaded and extracted the r8712u staging driver & it appears to be installed in the right place (lib/modules/3.1.9+/kernel/drivers/staging/rtl8712/r8712u.ko) - or is it ?

I've also downloaded the "firmware-realtek_0.35~bpo60+1_all.deb" file to the /home/pi directory and tried to (blindly !) follow debian's instructions on how to install the firmware - with no luck.

I should point out here that I am just starting out with Linux and a lot of the commands are a complete mystery to me so I'm a long way from being confident that I'm doing the right things.

Just wondered if anyone out there could explain in simple terms what I need to do to get the adapter installed & functional.

Have you looked at this link http://www.element14.com/community/docs/DOC-44703/l/raspberry-pi-wifi-adapter-testing. there is a couple of sections explaining what you are trying to do. Hope this helps

Hi Horus,

I tried this adapter with the latest Raspbian "Wheezy" image last week and worked without any changes. This is the recommended image from the Raspberry Pi Foundation:

http://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads

It looks like we are finally at the point where most wi-fi drivers and firmware are included by default. I would suggest moving to Raspbian "Wheezy" if possible. If that is a problem for you, then could you please let me know which image you are running and also the output of these commands:

Linux distribution info:
cat /etc/issue
Kernel info:
uname -a

@Horus: While you're at it, the output from a few other commands will also shed some light:

modprobe r8712u

which loads the r8712u.ko kernel module, and

lsmod | grep r8712u

which would show that the module is loaded if it returns anything at all. The last few lines of the kernel ring buffer after running the modprobe would also help, which can be displayed with

dmesg | tail -n20

If any command (say "XX") is a mystery, then

man XX

will often shed some light on it, as will

XX --help

Beyond that, don't be afraid to ask. Everything was a mystery to all of us, at one point in time.
