¡Hola a tod@s!

¡Saludos!

I had a really good laugh at this. image

Every language and culture has their odd metaphors of course, but that one has no equals!

PS. Although I haven't read it anywhere (the FAQ perhaps?), I suspect that the official language of the forum is English, however unfair that may be.

I don't know if there's an "official" language chez element14.  I think it's just natural selection -- if you post a query in a language that lots of posters know, you're more likely to get a response.

Although I'm English, Spanish is the language of sand, sea, and hot weather, and having fun with others outdoors.  If you're looking for another language to learn, and your worldview is "Our short time on this planet might as well be fun", choose Spanish.  Oh and tapas in Madrid at 3am are lovely. image

I have found that French is the best language for expressing exasperation.  It's a great language when driving a car, with wonderful expresions such as est-ce pour aujourd'*** ou pour demain? [are you going to do this today or tomorrow?] and qu'est-ce q'il fabrique là? [what the heck is he doing?] or if you're really annoyed qu'est-ce q'il fout là? [no translation supplied -- you'll have to pardon my French].

I think Italians might dispute this statement.  But then, everything in Italian sounds like an argument, n'est-ce pas?

Have I ever told you my favorite translator joke?  Here goes:

Four translators are arguing about what is the most beautiful language.  The Englishman says: "Oh, it's English -- English is so expressive.  Think of the word butterfly.  It gives you a wonderful image of a tiny creature flitting through the air..."

The Frenchman says: "Ah non, the French word for butterfly it's so light... so airy: papillon."

The Spaniard says: "Oh, but the Spanish word for butterfly is the most beautiful of all.  Listen... mariposa."

The German scowls and mutters to nobody in particular: "Und vat iss wrong mit Schmetterling?"

    Hahaha! image

There's a similar but sexually-oriented joke about how the German language turns nice friendly things into ugly ones, although not repeatable here.  Funny how languages evolve.

Agreed!  It is my personal misfortune that I don't know Italian and have never been there, despite a huge liking for Italian food and wine.  But on the other hand, vastly more beach restorts are natively Spanish. image

PS. I cannot even begin to touch on this subject adequately, but Spanish is also the best language for swearing.  It's totally toe-curling. image image image

I've heard that Russian is unbeatable for swearing.  In contrast, I've also heard that Japanese doesn't support swearing at all.  I friend of mine who lived in Japan and had become reasonably fluent asked a Japanese man sitting next to him in a bar to teach him some swear words.  The man looked at my friend blankly and asked him what he meant.  So my friend said something like: "you know, words you're not supposed to use."  The Japanese asked: "what is the point of having words if you're not allowed to use them?"  A very practical view IMO -- if it's true.
