Ethernet not working on RPI - my fault or the pi's?

Hi Everyone,

 

I got my RPI yesterday from E14 in Australia.

 

I was really impressed but haven't been able to get ethernet working.

 

I get no link lights (only OK and PWR) on a 5v/1a power supply. I've tried booting with and without keyboard but no luck. I loaded raspbian but couldn't ping anywhere. When I checked my interfaces file I saw that eth0 didn't have an 'auto' step so I added that and tried a static configuration but no luck. From one of the if/lsusb commands I did see that the Ethernet seemed to have a MAC address (which I imagine means the system can at least sense the port) but I just don't know what to do after trying different cables...


I've tried raspbian and xbian but neither seems to work and I'm not sure how I could definatively confirm if my ethernet is the source (and sole) problem...

  • I was having trouble with my raspberry pi connecting to the ethernet as well and was looking into all sorts of problems and various trouble shooting.  I noticed that when I plug in the ethernet cable, the status leds would flicker on just briefly and go off and remain off.  Turns out if I seat the cable completely into the jack the electrical connection is bad.  I experimented with plugging it in slowly until the leds came on but not enough so that the plug clicked into place.  This solved my problem.  The cable works just fine when plugged it into a laptop.  But everytime I fully plug it into the pi, it doesnt work.

     

    Sounds too silly to be true, but maybe the problem with many peoples pi's are the jack itself?

    Certainly sounds like a bad jack in your case, though it could also be the plug on your cable.  Have you tried a different cable, or the other end of the same cable?
