What is bloating the new image?

wallarug
wallarug over 12 years ago

The latest image as of today: 2012-12-16 Raspbain.

I just re-image my 2GB SD card which I have been using for ages and have re-imaged and installed all the software that I require before, has just produces an error message durring 'apt-get install program1...program32' (fill in the spaces) that I have NO SPACE ON SD CARD.

I have never seen this before with previous images.  Can anyone tell me what is new on the SD card that would be taking up all that precious free space? (new from OCT image?)

The apt-get install about is for 225mb of stuff that I use.  I have never had a problem installing all of that and then un-installing programs I don't need from there.  I remeber on the first image back in May/June, there was 311Mb of free space without un-installing or installing any programs... what has happened?

    exact commands I use on new images:

    apt-get update && apt-get upgrade

    apt-get install gparted tightvncserver arduino lxmusic python-dev python-serial minicom hostapd dnsmasq dhcpd wireless-tools bridge-utils

    apt-get remove squeak-vm penguinspuzzle smartsim vim-common zenity dillo debian-reference-en debian-reference-common aspell ed vim-common netsurf-common firmware-libertas firmware-brcm80211

    apt-get autoremove

    I then install RPi.GPIO module (which doesn't seem to work on new image - any ideas???)

    I think they added the pishop program. It might be worth removing that (if I am right).

    Some of the log files can also take a lot of space. You might check the /var/log folder. Just don't delete any of those files, simply make their length zero. (Some stuff is having problems if the log files don't exist anymore.)

    Their probably is other bloatware. It might be worth to have a list of all things that can be removed safely.

    Hi

    Did you get rid of the software and the previous image on the sd card because element 14 recomends at least 2GB for the os on the card so if you did not get rid of the previous image then that may have fill the space you have.

    My guess: people have been complaining that the RasPi standard distro needs to be more like Ubuntu and Windows image

    how would I apt-get remove pi-shop?  what is it's name?

    Hi

    Did you get rid of the software and the previous image on the sd card because element 14 recomends at least 2GB for the os on the card so if you did not get rid of the previous image then that may have fill the space you have.

    You can't re-image a card without distoying all previous data.  So yes, I did remove the previous OS.

    My guess: people have been complaining that the RasPi standard distro needs to be more like Ubuntu and Windows

    Sounds about right...I want to get rid of all programs that I don't need - that is - everything except startx and omxplayer + all the programs I have installed.

    I am compiling a list of software to un-install...

    This is what I have so far:

    aspell

    aspell-en

    cups-bsd       {If you don't need printing, then you don't need cups}

    cups-client

    cups-common

    debian-reference-common

    debian-reference-en

    dictionaries-common

    dillo

    firmware-atheros  {If your wireless card doesn't use atheros firmware package - same for next ones}

    firmware-brcm80211

    firmware-libertas

    midori

    netsurf-common  {Leave this if you want a browser}

    netsurf-gtk          { *as above* }

    pistore

    scratch

    smartsim

    squeak-vm

    squeak-plugins-scratch

    zenity

    zenity-common

    I can't say I have tested weather or not these packages will damage the OS in any way, shape, or form but I say most of them are not necessary.

    Here we go... I have tested this command:

    apt-get remove aspell aspell-en cups-bsd cups-client cups-common debian-reference-common debian-reference-en dictionaries-common dillo firmware-atheros firmware-brcm80211 firmware-libertas midori netsurf-common netsurf-gtk pistore scratch smartsim squeak-vm squeak-plugins-scratch zenity zenity-common

    Which has removed all of these programs.

    image

    with minimal issues (so far).  As above, this saves an initial 113 MB.  I will tell you want autoremove does in due course.

    EDIT:

    image

    EDIT 2:

    Here is results from apt-get autoremove:

    image

    Total space save thus far: 113MB + 44.4MB = 157.4MB  image

    Just FYI per file properties,

    2012-10-28 raspbian image 1939865600 bytes

    2012-12-16 raspbian image 1939865600 bytes

    After first installing it on a 2 GB SD card I have always used at least 4 GB cards since then  (this is what is suggested on the RPF downloads page)

    after also experiencing problems using apt-get. The ~ 198 MB left over on a 2 GB install is cutting it way too close if you plan to do any expansion

    of the base setup at all.
