Connecting to Internet (model B wired)

Former Member
Former Member over 12 years ago

i am trying to connect my raspberry pi model B to the internet using the ethernet port to my BT home hub. when i turn the pi on, 2 extra lights are illuminated on its circuit board. so i know that it is connected. but then when i try to open the web browser, it comes up with a message and doesn't do anything else. i am using the NetSurf browser. i am wondering if it is the password on the hub. i know it, but i dont know how to imput it. do you need to? help as soon as possible, please.image

You don't need a password or encryption code when 'wired' to your router/server, only for 'wireless' to prevent eavesdropping.

Both of my RPi's aquired the internet without any special effort on my part, when using the ethernet connection. (as far as I recall)

Pi assumes that it will be allocated a network address dynamically by the router/server.

If this is not the case, then Chapter 4 in the 'Raspberry Pi Users Guide' describes how to set a fixed address within Pi.

Tho' it may be that you only need to tell your router/server to use DHCP.

    Another old novice.

PS. I used midori as the browser.

Hello Joe, as Richard says, it should just really work ! What is the error message that you get, that is the first place to start.

You may want to try going into a terminal session and type 'ifconfig' and see what the output is there. If you post it here, please make sure to remove your external facing IP address just in case any nasty hacker types are watching. Risk is low, but there is no point in tweaking the nose of fate.

Hi Joe.  If you haven't figured it out yet, try looking at the following page: http://wiki.debian.org/NetworkConfiguration

If you're using the standard debian based image, the documentation should clarify how the network configuration should work.  Basically, the default setting that is there should use the DHCP protocol to retrieve an IP address from your router automatically, and the manual configuration shouldn't be required.  Make sure you change to the root user to update the network configuration (sudo su -).

    HTH,

    Rich

Well, sometimes it works, but then it looses connection. well, what can you expect from the 25M cable i'm using? when i finally got it working, and tried to download something, it said in the terminal that it 'could not resolve mirrordirector.raspberry.org', or something like that. i'll try reconfiguring the internet. thanks for all of your help. oh, and the internet only works if i have my laptop plugged in and conected to the internet (wirelessly). anyways, chau!

P.S: i use the NetSurf browser.
